Johns Hopkins Falls to Washington & Lee, 1-0

BALTIMORE, MD – Washington & Lee topped host Johns Hopkins, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action. The Blue Jays slip to 1-1-1 on the season while the Generals improve to 2-1-0.

Washington & Lee had a chance to get on the board in the 22nd minute with a Matthew Jenkins penalty kick, but John Ghanem got a foot on it to keep the game scoreless. On the ensuing corner kick, Anthony Careccia's header seemed ticketed for the bottom left corner of the goal, but it was cleared off the line.

The Generals drew a second penalty kick as time expired in the first half after a called handball on a Jack Travis shot. Ryan Shapre stepped up and converted the shot to send WLU into the half with a 1-0 lead. Hopkins outshot Washington & Lee 9-2 in the second half, but five saves by Miles Furman kept the Blue Jays off the board.

Hopkins finished with an 11-7 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corners. Ghanem tallied three saves in the loss, while Furman totaled six.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 9 at Lebanon Valley. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm.
