BALTIMORE, MD –  Jonathan Kindred joined the Johns Hopkins staff in September 2016 and currently serves as the Associate Director of Athletics/Compliance and Operations; he was promoted to this position in July 2022 after previously serving as Assistant Director of Athletics (August 2018 - June 2022) and Assistant Director of Student Athlete Success (September 2016 - July 2018).

Kindred serves as the sport administrator for Johns Hopkins’ highly-successful baseball, men’s and women’s swimming and women’s tennis teams.  He supervises three full-time head coaches with additional oversight of seven assistant coaches and programs with nearly 100 student-athletes.  He plays an active role with each team in budget development, fundraising, competition scheduling and rules education.

Kindred also manages all NCAA compliance operations for Johns Hopkins’ multi-divisional athletic program that includes 24 varsity programs and more than 600 student-athletes.  In this role, he monitors, provides oversight and directs education on NCAA compliance to all internal and external constituents and prepares all NCAA-mandated reports.  He also serves as the department’s liaison with a number of on-campus partners, including the Office of Institutional Equity, the University Registrar, Student Financial Services and the Office of Student Conduct.

In addition, Kindred has been a key member of the Student-Athlete Development Team, which has provided programming and educational opportunities with a focus on career development.  He also serves as the primary game operations manager for home athletic events with tournament director responsibilities for the many conference and NCAA Tournament championships hosted by Johns Hopkins.

in his role as the Assistant Director of Student Athlete Success, Kindred was a member of the Johns Hopkins Center for Student Success staff and worked closely with leaders in the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences, the Whiting School of Engineering and the Department of Athletics to create and implement innovative programs and services to enhance student athletes’ academic and career success.

Kindred’s key initiative – Blue Jays RISE (Realizing Individual Scholarly Excellence) – was launched during the 2017-18 academic year.  The program was established to fully support the academic needs of student-athletes with an emphasis on a successful transition to Johns Hopkins as well as enhanced academic support opportunities for all student-athletes through graduation.

No stranger to Baltimore, Kindred previously spent more than four years at UMBC, where he directed the operation of the athletic academic center and tutoring program as the Assistant Director of Academic Services from 2014-16.  He worked closely with the men’s lacrosse and women’s tennis teams during that time, served on a number of campus committees and was the liaison to the University’s Career Center for the design and implementation of student-athlete focused career development events.

Kindred spent his first two years at UMBC as an academic advisor in the Department of Athletics.  In that role, he worked with a number of teams, including men’s basketball, men’s soccer, softball, tennis, swimming and cross country.

Prior to his time at UMBC, Kindred served as the Academic Success Coordinator at St. Francis University (PA), a ticket operations assistant with the Pittsburgh Pirates and a public relations intern with the New York Knicks.  He also spent one season as a graduate manager with the St. Francis men’s basketball team and one season as the assistant men’s tennis coach at DeSales University (PA).

A 2008 graduate of DeSales with a bachelor’s degree in sport management, Kindred went on to earn his master’s degree in educational leadership from St. Francis in 2010.
