Max Schlegel was promoted to head coach in February 2019 after serving as an assistant for the Blue Jays from 2016 to 2018. He came to Homewood after a two-year stint as the head coach at Calvert Hall.

Schlegel has led Hopkins to three trips to the USA Water Polo National Semifinals, with a third-place finish in 2021, as well as three CWPA Division III Championship titles. He has coached 12 ACWPC All-Americans, including a pair of first team selections.

A four-year standout a Loyola Marymount, Schlegel helped the Lions to four straight Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) championships and four straight trips to the NCAA Final Four. LMU earned a pair of third-place finishes at the NCAAs in 2008 and 2010. He totaled 50 goals, 23 assists and 56 steals in his career and captained the Lions as a senior.

Schlegel, a 2012 graduate of LMU, led Calvert Hall to an MIAA Championship in 2013 as an assistant coach and again in 2015 as the head coach. He also guided the Cardinals to a Prep Eastern Championship, a Flight 3 title and a Flight 2 runner-up finish at the Beast of the East Championship.

A native of Annapolis, MD, Schlegel played two years on the National Development team, two years on the National Cadet team and one year on the National Youth b team. He also won a gold medal in the Youth Pan America Games in Mexico.

Schlegel lives in Baltimore with his wife Ali and son Landon.
