Johns Hopkins Captures Second Straight ECAC Championship

Nov. 4, 2001

ANNVILLE, PA - Freshman forward Jen Baldwin (Medway, MA/Medway), named tournament Most Valuable Player, scored a goal and added an assist as the fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins women's soccer team won its second consecutive ECAC Mid-Atlantic Women's Soccer Championship with a 2-0 victory over third-seeded Carnegie Mellon. The Blue Jays earned their third straight shutout and school-record 14th of the season to improve to 15-4-3. Carnegie Mellon finished the year with a 13-5-1 record.

Baldwin opened the scoring with an unassisted goal, her team-leading 11th of the season, with 35:25 left to play in the first half. She added her school-record 11th assist of the year on a goal by senior midfielder Alix Batty (Gloversville, NY/Choate Rosemary Hall) in the 67th-minute of the match. Baldwin finishes the season with 33 points, which is the third-highest point total in a season by a JHU freshman and the most points by a Blue Jay since the 1998 season. Batty's goal was her second of the season and seventh for her career.

Junior goaltender Shannon O'Malley (Greenlawn, NY/Long Island Lutheran) made 10 saves on the afternoon as Hopkins also set a school-record for fewest goals allowed in a season with 10, breaking the previous mark of 12 set during the 1999 season.

The defense, led by juniors Yquem Roman (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township) and Lauren Hanlon (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) and sophomore Laura Bauer (Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculate) proved to be a strength for JHU all season long as well as throughout the tournament. The Blue Jays outshot opponents 388-179 for the season and set a school-record with nine consecutive shutouts earlier in the year.

Today's victory also marked the 100th win for head coach Leo Weil and the Johns Hopkins women's soccer program. In 10 seasons, the Blue Jays sport a 100-55-14 (.633) all-time record, including a 33-7-3 (.802) mark over the last two years. JHU has won at least 15 games for three straight years and has recorded six consecutive winning seasons.
