BALTIMORE, Md. -- Johns Hopkins senior running back Scott Martorana (Long Valley, NJ/W. Morris Central) rushed for a game-high 134 yards and tied his career-high with three touchdowns to lead the Blue Jays to a 28-6 victory over host Rochester at Fauver Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 2-0 for the fourth time in five years, while the Yellowjackets fall to 1-1 with the loss.
Martorana gave Hopkins the lead for good with a 42-yard touchdown run that capped a quick, two-play 57-yard drive with 5:07 remaining in the first quarter. Rochester, which had taken a 3-0 lead on a 31-yard field goal by Chris Johnson with 7:29 remaining in the first quarter, drew to within 7-6 on a 19-yard field goal by Johnson with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter, but that was as close as UR would get.
Martorana scored on runs of six yards and 25 yards in the first five minutes of the second quarter to extend the lead to 21-6 and junior fullback Steve Stache (Charleroi, PA/Charleroi) pushed the lead to 28-6 with a one-yard plunge less than two minutes after Martorana's last touchdown. Stache's scoring run was set up by a 49-yard pass from senior quarterback Rob Heleniak (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown Academy) to Martorana that gave JHU first and goal at the one. Stache scored one play later to account for the final scoring.
The Johns Hopkins defense continued its solid play as Rochester was limited to just 306 yards of total offense and 107 yards rushing (75 of which came on one play). Last week, Rochester rolled up a school-record 595 yards of total offense in a 44-6 win over St. John Fisher. The Yellowjackets had the ball inside the Johns Hopkins 10-yard line three times and came away with a total of just three points on those three possessions. The Blue Jays have allowed just three field goals through two games and have outscored the opposition, 62-9 in their first two games.
Junior linebacker Mike Little (Red Bank, NJ/Middletown South) led the Blue Jays with 12 tackles, including 2.5 for losses. Senior linebacker Marc Della Pia (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) added nine tackles, including one for a loss. Freshman defensive back Matt Campbell (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) added five tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one interception, and two pass breakups.
Martorana continued his assault on the Johns Hopkins record book with his effort. His three touchdowns give him 23 for his career, which ties him with Brad McLam for second on the career rushing touchdowns list at JHU. He needs just two more to tie Harry Leet for the most in school history. In addition, his 134 yards rushing improve his career total to 1,349, which moves him past Cliff Harding into 12th place on the career rushing list at Johns Hopkins.
Heleniak was 13-of-27 for 135 yards and one interception, while senior Zach Baylin led the way with four receptions for 56 yards. In the process, Baylin became just the fifth player in school history to amass 1,500 career receiving yards as he now has 1,521.
The Blue Jays will return home on Friday, September 21 when they host Bridgewater (VA). The Eagles entered this week's games ranked fourth in the nation.
