Baltimore, MD - Sophomore guard Kevin Marquez (Oakton, VA/Oakton) scored a career-high 20 points but missed a three-point attempt with one second left that would have tied the game as the No. 5 Catholic University men's basketball team escaped Goldfarb Gymnasium with a hard-fought 84-79 victory over Johns Hopkins Monday night.
With the victory Catholic won its 13th straight game and improved to 13-1 on the season, while the Blue Jays saw their five-game winning streak snapped and fell to 8-6. Catholic guard Kevin Wise led all scorers with 25 points and hit 7-of-9 three-point attempts, while Matt Hilleary added 22 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Cardinals.
Hopkins led 42-38 at halftime and 50-43 with 16:56 left in the game before Catholic began its comeback. The Blue Jays lead was 55-51 before Wise hit a three-pointer and, after a bucket by Jay Kreider (Sykesville, MD/River Hill), hit another three from the corner to tie the game at 57 with 9:10 left to play.
Marquez, who finished 5-of-9 from behind the arc, answered with a three-pointer to put Hopkins back up by three, but Bobby Henning responded with a jumper. Following a free throw by Dan Naturale (Bloomfield, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), Wise hit another three-pointer to put Catholic up 62-61 with 7:45 remaining. After a basket by Brendan Kamm (Avon, NJ/Somerville) gave Hopkins the lead back, Blair Mills hit from behind the arc to regain the lead for the Cardinals.
JHU forward Mike Blaine (Washington, DC/Bishop Ireton) then followed his miss to tie the game, but Mills answered with a basket to put Catholic up 67-65, and the Cardinals would not trail again. Two free throws from Wise put Catholic up 81-76, its largest lead of the game, with 28 seconds remaining, but Marquez hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to two with 12 seconds left. Hilleary then hit one of two free throws with nine seconds remaining, and a Hopkins violation on the inbounds pass looked to seal the victory for Catholic. However, Chris Ganan (San Diego, CA/University of San Diego) stole the inbounds pass and fed Marquez, whose three-pointer from the left wing was long. Hilleary grabbed the rebound and hit two foul shots with one second left to give the Cardinals a five-point win.
Steve Adams (Butler, PA/Butler) scored 18 points and Matthew Eisley (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon) added 14 for Hopkins, but both Blue Jays forwards fouled out in the final five minutes. Kamm added a season-high 14 points, while Blaine grabbed a season-high eight rebounds off the bench.
Hopkins returns to Centennial Conference play Wednesday night when the Blue Jays travel to Carlisle, PA, to take on Dickinson at 7:30 p.m.
