Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins seniors Jamie Larrimore (Chestertown, MD/Kent County), Erin Wellner (East Williston, NY/Sacred Heart Academy), and Christy Peterson (Fallston, MD/Fallston) combined for 10 goals and two assists to lead the No. 18 Blue Jays to a 12-4 victory over American University in women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Homewood Field.
Larrimore scored four goals and added one assist, Wellner recorded three goals and one assist, and Peterson scored three goals on three shots as Hopkins won its second straight game after opening the season with three losses. American fell to 2-3 on the season.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 2-1 lead midway through the first half, but Hopkins responded by scoring the next six goals of the contest. Meghan Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) started the run when she scored off an assist from Liz Holland (Catonsville, MD/Mt. De Sales) at the 11:45 mark, and Peterson scored consecutive goals 25 seconds apart to put JHU ahead, 4-2. Larrimore then scored back-to-back goals a minute apart, the second coming off an assist from Anne Crisafulli (Garden City, NY/Garden City), to increase the lead to 6-2. Wellner scored an unassisted goal to end the run, as a goal by American's Holly Deland with 37 seconds left in the half cut the Hopkins lead to 7-3 at the break.
Leah Onda (Sykesville, MD/South Carroll) fed Peterson for a goal just 1:07 into the second half as the Blue Jays regained the five-goal advantage, and Wellner scored off a pass from Larrimore to give Hopkins a 9-3 advantage. Deland scored her second goal of the game with 19:13 remaining, but Larrimore answered by scoring off a pass from Erin Riordan (Brightwaters, NY/Bay Shore). Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) scored an unassisted goal 11 seconds later and Wellner found the back of the net with 4:36 left to conclude the scoring.
The Hopkins starting defense of Caroline Miller (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephens & St. Agnes), Kate Gilland (Medford, NJ/Shawnee), Katie Stevenson (Chestertown, MD/Kent County), and Lacey-Leigh Hentz (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) held the Eagles to just 19 shots, while goalkeeper Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) made 11 saves while allowing just four goals. American goalkeeper Laura Randisi collected 19 saves in defeat.
Hopkins returns home Friday when the Blue Jays host Davidson in an American Lacrosse Conference matchup at 4 p.m.
