Baltimore, MD - Courtney Hobbs scored four goals and added two assists and Meredith Egan added four goals and an assist as the No. 13 University of Maryland women's lacrosse team held off a second-half rally by No. 17 Johns Hopkins to defeat the Blue Jays, 13-8, at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Jays trailed 8-1 in the last minute of the first half, but senior attacker Jamie Larrimore (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) scored with 37 seconds left and senior attacker Erin Wellner (East Williston, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) scored a free position goal with four seconds remaining to cut the Maryland lead to 8-3 at halftime.
Hopkins, which dropped to 7-5 with the loss, continued its comeback in the second half, as junior attacker Liz Holland (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) scored off a beautiful feed from Wellner to make it an 8-4 game with 28:36 left. Hobbs answered at the 23:48 mark when she scored off an assist from Sonia Judd, but junior attacker Meghan Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) again cut the lead to four when she scored off a pass from Wellner.
Egan scored off a Kelly Coppedge assist to put Maryland up 10-5 with 16:55 remaining, but senior midfielder Christy Peterson (Fallston, MD/Fallston) scored an unassisted goal just 12 seconds later and Larrimore scored an unassisted tally less than two minutes later to cut the Terrapin lead to 10-7 with 14:52 remaining in the game.
That would be as close as Hopkins would get, as Katie Robinson scored off a Coppedge assist at the 12:48 mark, Hobbs scored an unassisted goal with 6:46 left, and Judd scored off a Hobbs pass with 4:46 left to give Maryland a 13-7 advantage. Larrimore scored her team-high third goal of the game with 1:26 left to conclude the scoring.
Junior goalkeeper Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) stopped eight shots in goal for the Blue Jays, while Alexis Venechanos made six saves for the Terrapins, who improved to 8-6 this season. Maryland held a 31-22 shot advantage and a 36-20 edge in ground balls, the first game this season Hopkins did not collect more ground balls than its opponent.
Sophomore midfielder Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) gave Hopkins the early lead when she scored off a Wellner assist at the 24:25 mark, but Maryland responded by scoring the game's next eight goals over the ensuing 23 minutes. Kristie Leggio ignited the run with a goal off an assist from Hobbs with 22:11 left in the half, and less than three minutes later Hobbs added an unassisted goal to give the Terrapins the lead for good.
Maryland held its 2-1 advantage until Judd scored consecutive goals 1:40 apart to make it a 4-1 game, and Egan scored three straight goals as the Terrapins took a 7-1 lead at the 4:16 mark of the half. Hobbs added a goal off an assist from Egan with 1:34 left in the half to give Maryland a seven-goal lead before Hopkins started its comeback.
