Hempstead, NY - Junior attacker Meghan Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) scored her fourth goal of the game with 9:07 remaining to break a 12-12 tie as the No. 17 Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team held off a Hofstra comeback and defeat the Pride, 15-12, Wednesday afternoon.
Senior attacker Erin Wellner (East Williston, NY/Sacred Heart Academy), who finished with three goals and four assists, added two unassisted goals late to put the Pride away. Fellow senior Jamie Larrimore (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) added three goals and three assists and Burnett recorded a season-high four goals on four shots for the Blue Jays, who improved to 9-5 and kept their NCAA Tournament hopes alive. Hofstra fell to 8-8 on the season.
Hopkins appeared to be cruising to its ninth win in its last 11 games when freshman defender Lacey-Leigh Hentz (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) scored her first career goal with 23:15 remaining to give the Blue Jays a 12-5 lead. But the Pride would score seven unanswered goals, including three in a three-minute stretch when Hentz was on the sidelines after getting a yellow card, to tie the game at 12 with 11:25 to play.
The Blue Jays would respond, as Burnett scored off a feed from Larrimore to give Hopkins the lead back, and the JHU defense would not allow another Hofstra goal as the Blue Jays dominated down the stretch.
The Pride drew first blood on a Kristin Marshall goal just 3:39 into the game, but sophomore midfielder Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's), who finished with two goals and an assist, quickly tied the game just 1:17 later when she scored off an assist from Wellner. Larrimore then scored two goals and assisted on a Burnett tally over the ensuing five minutes as Hopkins took a 4-1 lead at the 20:28 mark.
Jen Maget scored for Hofstra to cut the Hopkins lead to two, but Wellner fed Larrimore and junior attacker Liz Holland (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) for consecutive goals and Burnett added her second of the day as Hopkins led 6-2 at the 15:54 mark. Maget answered with her second goal of the game, but goals by Larrimore and freshman midfielder Kristen Miller (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) gave the Blue Jays an 8-3 lead at halftime.
Pearce opened the second half with an unassisted goal at the 28:23 mark, but Kathleen Mikowski scored the first of her three goals to make it a 9-4 game. Wellner and Burnett then sandwiched goals around a tally by Megan Zimmer, and Hentz followed with her unassisted goal to give Hopkins a 12-5 lead before the Pride began their comeback.
Blue Jays goalkeeper Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) made eight saves for Hopkins, which returns to action Saturday when JHU hosts George Mason at 5 p.m.
