Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins senior attacker Erin Wellner (East Williston, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) recorded four goals and two assists and senior attacker Jamie Larrimore (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) added four goals and an assist to lead the No. 18 Blue Jays to a 15-6 win over Towson in women's lacrosse action Wednesday evening at Homewood Field.
Junior attacker Meghan Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) scored a goal and assisted on three others for Hopkins, which improved to 10-6 on the season. Freshman attacker Erin Riordan (Brightwaters, NY/Bay Shore), who entered the game with two career goals, recorded a hat trick as the Blue Jays reached the double-digit win mark for the ninth straight season. Kat Brady scored two goals for Towson, which fell to 6-9 on the season and lost its fifth in a row.
The Blue Jays led 6-3 at halftime and the Tigers cut the advantage to two on a goal by Abigail Giancola just 1:36 into the second half, but Hopkins responded with a 6-0 run over the ensuing 14 minutes to put the game away. Wellner began the spurt with an unassisted goal at the 26:45 mark, and six minutes later Burnett scored on a free position shot. Burnett then assisted on goals by Wellner and Larrimore just 54 seconds apart to make it a 10-4 game, and freshman midfielder Kristen Miller (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) increased the lead to seven with a free position goal with 15:52 remaining. Wellner ended the run with an unassisted goal exactly one minute later to put Hopkins ahead, 12-4.
Martha Dwyer scored an unassisted goal at the 11:49 mark, but sophomore midfielder Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) answered with a goal off a Wellner assist with 9:14 to play. Riordan then scored two straight goals off assists from senior midfielder Christy Peterson (Fallston, MD/Fallston) and Burnett before Brady scored a free position goal with 20 seconds left.
Junior goalkeeper Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) stopped seven shots and allowed just five goals for the Blue Jays, while freshman Catherine Sawyer (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) made one save in relief.
Hopkins got on the board first, as Larrimore scored off an assist from Wellner just 1:35 into the game, and Riordan scored her first goal off a Pearce assist 2:40 later. Pearce then scored an unassisted goal at the 19:50 mark, but Erin Cayea scored a free position goal and assisted on Brady's first tally to cut the lead to 3-2 with 15:48 remaining in the half. Larrimore answered with an unassisted goal for the Blue Jays, but Amy Middleton again made it a one-goal game with a free position goal at the 11:21 mark. Larrimore then scored a free position goal with 9:38 left and assisted on a Wellner goal with 3:00 to play to give Hopkins a three-goal halftime lead.
The Blue Jays conclude their regular season Saturday when Hopkins hosts No. 6 Cornell at Homewood Field at 12 noon.
