Balanced Attack Leads Hopkins Past St. Mary's, 4-0

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - Four players scored as the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team defeated St. Mary's College 4-0 this afternoon on the road. The Blue Jays improved to 2-0 on the year and have outscored their first two opponents 10-0. Hopkins also improved to 7-2-1 all-time against the Seahawks, who drop their 2002 season opener.

Sophomore Jenn Sciarpelletti (Sleepy Hollow, NY/Scarsdale) opened the scoring in the 27th minute off an assist from junior Laura Bauer (Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculate). The goal was Sciarpelletti's second of the season and the assist was Bauer's first of her career. JHU extended the lead to 2-0 at halftime as senior Lauren Hanlon (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) scored an unassisted goal in the 44th minute, her first of the year and eighth of her career.

The Blue Jays made the score 3-0 in the 52nd minute as senior Jill Minger (Durham, OR/St. Mary's) scored of a feed from sophomore Kathleen Turley (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park). Minger's 19th career goal moved her into a tie for fourth at Hopkins in career goals and career points (53). Junior Jessica Sapienza (Northport, NY/Northport) capped the scoring in the 84th minute with her team-leading third goal of the year on a cross from junior Annie Colabella (East Granby, CT/East Granby).

Senior Shannon O'Malley (Greenlawn, NY/Long Island Lutheran) made two saves for the shutout as JHU outshot the Seahawks 19-7 for the game and held a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks. Caitlin McClure made eight stops for St. Mary's.

The Blue Jays return to action Sunday, September 8 as JHU travels to face New York University at 1:00 p.m. Hopkins holds a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series versus the Violets.
