Oct. 15, 2003

Box Score

Carlisle, PA - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team posted a 2-1 win in penalty strokes over Dickinson Wednesday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, Katie Austin scored an unassisted goal with 23:20 remaining to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays responded when senior forward Kelly Hewitt (Stafford, VA/Springfield Township-PA) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Meighan Roose (Baltimore, MD/York-ME) with 13:15 remaining.

The teams remained tied throughout the rest of regulation and two overtime periods, forcing penalty strokes. The Blue Jays had a chance to win in the second overtime, but Roose was stopped on a penalty stroke by Dickinson goalkeeper Tara McFadden.

The Blue Jays quickly took a 2-0 in the penalty strokes, as senior forward Jenny Farrelly (Clinton Township, NJ/North Hunterdon) and senior forward Rachel Callaway (Ardmore, PA/Lower Merion) each scored. After both teams failed to score in the third round, Roose cliched the win for Hopkins by scoring in the fourth. JHU freshman goalkeeper Dayna Eng (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial), who only played in the penalty strokes, made two saves before allowing a goal in the final round, as Hopkins won the penalty strokes, 3-1. The win was the first in penalty strokes for the Blue Jays since a 1-0 victory over Salisbury State in the 1999 NCAA Tournament Second Round.

JHU sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Shifman (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) made nine saves for the Blue Jays, who won their third straight game to improve to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in the Centennial Conference. McFadden stopped 12 shots for Dickinson, which fell to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Hopkins held a 20-17 advantage in shots, including 10-4 in the overtime periods. The Blue Jays also had a 17-9 edge in penalty corners.

Hopkins travels to Haverford Saturday for a 1 p.m. league game with the Fords.
