JHU Wins Two at Maryland State Tournament

BALTIMORE, MD -- The Johns Hopkins volleyball team was victorious in its first two matches in pool play of the Asics Maryland Division III Volleyball Tournament on Friday in Goldsfarb Gymnasium. This year's tournament is hosted by Hopkins and Goucher College.

The Blue Jays notched their first win with a 3-0 victory over St. Mary's (MD) by scores of 30-22, 30-14, 30-25. JHU was led by senior outside hitter Stephanie Kaliades (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) who finished with a team-high 11 kills and 16 digs. Junior setter Betsy Baydala (Rockville Center, NY/Southside) added 19 assists.

Hopkins continued its success with another 3-0 victory over Villa Julie. The Blue Jays shutout the Mustangs with scores of 30-20, 32-30, 30-26. Sophomore Katie O'Callaghan (Babylon, NY/Babylon) paced the offense with 18 kills, while Kaliades chipped in with 16. Baydala recorded 28 assists in the victory.

In other tournament action Salisbury knocked off Villa Julie 3-0, by scores of 30-24, 30-24, 30-23. Senior Suzanne Powell (Salisbury, MD/Wicomico) was a force with 10 kills. Freshman Abbey Petrecca (Baldwin, MD/Perry Hall) added 26 assists for the Sea Gulls.

St. Mary's rebounded with a 3-0 win over Washington College. The Seahawks defeated the Shorewomen with scores of 30-16, 30-16, 30-25. Junior Nicole Tuttle (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) recorded nine kills. Senior Jeannie Long (Montgomery Village, MD/Watkins Mill) was the catalyst offensively with 21 assists.

Salisbury improved to 2-0 in the tournament with a, 3-0, win over Washington College. The Sea Gulls took all three games by scores of 30-28, 30-15, 30-26. Junior Lindsay Lawson (Baltimore, MD/Dulaney) led the way with nine assists and nine digs. Junior Allison Pikounis (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) added seven kills in the victory.

St. Mary's improved to 2-1 in pool play with a 3-0 victory over Villa Julie. The Seahawks were led by Long's 19 assists and senior Carol Schmoeller's (Baltimore, MD/Catonsville) eight kills. Senior Theresea Jason (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) recorded 25 assists for the Mustangs.

Pool play will continue at both Goucher and Hopkins on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the semifinals. Both the semifinals and finals will be played at Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon.
