EWING, NJ -- The Johns Hopkins women's swimming team turned in one of its top performances of the 2003-04 season this weekend as the Blue Jays split a tri-meet with national powers West Chester and The College of New Jersey. The Blue Jays defeated CNJ, 238.5-124.5, but fell to West Chester, 182-168. West Chester tied for third at last year's NCAA Division II Championships, while CNJ placed 13th at the 2003 NCAA Division III Championships.
Sophomore Sida Liu (Phoenix, AZ/North Canyon) led the way for the Blue Jays as she won three events and was a member of the first-place 400 medley relay team. She won the 100 back (1:00.80), the 200 fly (2:10.37) and the 200 back (2:10.12) and swam the second leg of the 400 medley relay (4:04.84).
Junior Diana Smirnova (Las Cruces, NM/Phillips Exeter Academy) and freshman Allie Foster (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) were double-winners for the Blue Jays. Smirnova won the 100 fly (1:00.57) and the 200 IM (2:14.48), while Foster placed first in the 400 IM (4:14.87) and the 200 breast (2:28.55). Foster was also a member of the winning 400-medley relay team.
Joining Foster and Liu on the first-place 400 medley relay team were sophomore Abiona Redwood (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew) and freshman Kelly Robinson (Holden, MA/Worcester Academy). Robinson also placed second in the 200 fly (2:10.37), while Redwood's top individual performance came in the 50 free, where she placed third (25.73).
