BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore Leah Dudley (Westborough, MA/Westborough) scored one goal and assisted the game-winner as the Johns Hopkins field hockey team picked up its first conference win of the year, 2-1 over Haverford at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays improved to 4-10 overall and 1-5 in the Centennial Conference while the Fords dropped to 2-11 and 0-6.
Johns Hopkins controlled time of possession in the first half and finally converted after 28 scoreless minutes from both teams. Dudley's team-high fourth goal of the year came unassisted from the middle of the circle with 7:04 left in the half.
The Blue Jays struck again four minutes later when senior Jen Rolston (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro) scored off a corner set up by Dudley and junior Shelby Boxenbaum (North Potomac, MD/Thomas S. Wootton) with 3:03 remaining.
Hopkins led 2-0 at the half after out-shooting the Fords 7-1. Haverford goalkeeper Amie Roe had three saves while sophomore Danya Eng (Ellicot City, MD/Centennial) played the first 35 minutes in goal for the Blue Jays.
Haverford came out firing after the break, taking five early shots and scoring just 2:50 into the half. Jen Chu crossed the ball to Sarah Walker on the left side for an easy goal, and the Fords trailed 2-1 with over 32 minutes to play.
The Blue Jays quickly regained momentum on both ends of the field and made big plays in the final minutes to escape with the 2-1 win. Junior Meredith Shifman (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) made four saves and senior Kate Rydstrom (Hollis, NH/Hollis Brookline) helped prevent goals on corners at 1:40 and 1:10.
Hopkins finished with a 17-7 shot advantage and up 8-3 on penalty corners while Roe had a game-high eight saves in goal for Haverford.
Johns Hopkins travels to Washington College on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. for another Centennial Conference matchup.
