Baltimore, MD - Two weeks after losing to them by one goal and one week after finishing three spots below the them at the ECAC Championships, the Johns Hopkins water polo team edged the Bucknell Bison 14-13 in Baltimore. Senior Brian Mead scored a career-high nine goals for the Blue Jays (9-8) in their win over the 17th-ranked team in Division I.
Johns Hopkins jumped to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter off two goals from Mead and one apiece from James Singleton, Dan Stillman and Robert Bates. Mead tallied three more in the second period and Sean McCreery added another but Bucknell scored twice for a 9-2 Hopkins lead at the half.
Each team had three goals in the third period, which ended with Johns Hopkins ahead 12-5, before the Bison crept back in the game in the fourth. Bucknell had eight goals and Bradley Roslyn scored four times in the final quarter including his last goal with 33 seconds to play that brought Bucknell within one, 14-13.
Mead had two goals in each of the third and fourth quarter, and Bates scored his second goal in the third. Roslyn led the Bison with five goals.
Mitch Williams finished with 28 saves for Hopkins while Trevor Mullins had 19 for Bucknell.
