BALTIMORE, MD -- Johns Hopkins junior forward Meg McIntosh (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood) scored her 10th goal of the season just under eight minutes into the second half and a stingy Johns Hopkins defense made sure that was enough as the Blue Jays knocked off visiting McDaniel, 1-0 in women's soccer action at Homewood Field Thursday night. The win is the second straight and fifth in the last six games for the Blue Jays, who improve to 12-3-1, 6-2 in the Centennial Conference with the win. The Green Terror dropped their fifth one-goal game of the season and fall to 7-7-1, 2-5-1.
McIntosh finished a three-shot flurry that resulted in an open-net goal at the 52:56 mark. Senior Jenn Sciarpelletti's (Sleepy Hollow, NY/Scarsdale) initial shot was saved by McDaniel goalie Michelle Mullen (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake), but Mullen couldn't control the rebound as she went down to make the save. Freshman Cassandra Vogel (Laurel Hollow, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) ripped a follow-up shot off the inside of the post before McIntosh poked what proved to be the game-winner into an empty net.
The Blue Jays had numerous opportunities to get some breathing room, but Mullen was solid in goal for the Terror as she registered 10 saves. The Blue Jays held an 18-1 advantage in shots and a 6-0 cushion in corner kicks. Junior Jen Goebel (Jericho, NY/Jericho) had one save and picked her eighth shutout of the season.
Johns Hopkins, which has now won 12 or more games in eight straight seasons and improved to 6-0-1 at home this year, will next be in action on Tuesday, October 26 when the Blue Jays play at Dickinson. A win would virtually assure Hopkins of a berth in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament. McDaniel, which was officially eliminated from contention for a spot in the Centennial Tournament with the loss tonight, will host Ursinus on Saturday.
