BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team opened its 2004-05 season with a 4-0 record at home this past Saturday, when it defeated St. John's (MD), New Jersey Institute of Technology, Virginia Tech and Yeshiva.

Johns Hopkins routed St. John's 22-5 led by a 9-0 shutout in sabre from junior Jason Park, sophomore Nick Gonzalez and senior Fred Lee. Foil won 7-2 behind sophomore Nick Marchuk (3-0), freshman Max Yusem (3-0) and sophomore James McIver (1-2) while epee won 6-3 with 2-1 performances by freshman Jake Sand, senior Anson Tang and senior John Majewski.

A 9-0 win in foil by senior Brian Bishe, Marchuk, and Yusem helped Johns Hopkins defeat New Jersey Institute of Technology 21-6. Sabre won 6-3 as freshman Aaron Fernandes, Sand and Park all went 2-0 in the first rounds before Lee and Gonzalez were defeated as substitutes in the third round. Epee also went 6-3 behind Majewski, Tang and sophomore Thomas Fellows, who all went 2-1.

Johns Hopkins defeated Virginia Tech 22-5 behind Park (3-0), Fernandes (2-0), Sand (1-1), Lee (1-0) and Gonzalez (0-1) in sabre, Bishe (2-0), Yusem (3-0) Marchuk (3-0) and McIver (0-1) in foil and Majewski (2-1), Fellows (3-0), Tang (2-1) in epee.

The Blue Jays nearly shut out Yeshiva and finished with a 25-2 win as Marchuk, Bishe and Yusem won all three of their bouts in foil. Majewski, Fellows and Tang also earned a shutout in epee while Fernandes and Park went 3-0 and Sand went 1-3 for the win in sabre.
