EVANSTON, IL -- The 11th-ranked Northwestern women's lacrosse team jumped ahead of ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins 7-2 in the first half, never let the Blue Jays get closer than two goals and scored the final four goals of the game in the last 10 minutes as the Wildcats eased past JHU, 15-8 in an American Lacrosse Conference game Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 12-3, 4-1, while Northwestern improves to 12-1, 4-0.
Freshman Kristen Kjellman scored two of her four goals during the opening 7-2 spree for the Wildcats. After Lindsay Finocchiaro and Hopkins' Erin Riordan traded goals in the first 6:31 of the game, the Wildcats ripped off six of the next seven goals over an 18-minute span to build the five-goal lead. Kjellman socred twice during the 6-1 run, while the Blue Jays managed just a Marlena Wittelsberger goal during that time.
The Blue Jays trimmed the deficit to 7-4 at the half as freshman Mary Key and sophomore Kelley Putnam scored late in the half.
Aly Josephs scored an unassisted goal 5:59 into the second half to make it 8-4, but freshman Steph Janice and Putnam scored in a span of less than a minute to give the Blue Jays the momentum. After nearly three scoreless minutes Kjellman and Josephs scored back-to-back goals a little over five minutes apart to give NU a four-goal lead (10-6). After sophomore Meagan Voight and Key sandwiched goals around a Lindsay Munday tally for Northwestern to make it 11-8 with just over 10 minutes remaining the Wildcats sealed the victory with four unanswered goals in a span of just 5:05. Laura Glassanos scored two of her three goals during the spree, which was capped by Kjellman's final goal with 4:44 remaining.
The Blue Jays were led by Key and Putnam, who each scored two goals. Janice and Riordan added one goal and one assist each. Lauren Riddick registered nine saves in goal for the Blue Jays.
Kjellman led a balanced scoring attack for the Wildcats with her four goals, while Munday and Glassanos both added three goals. Ashley Gersuk had nine saves in goal for the Wildcats, who will clinch the ALC's automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Tournament with season-ending victories over Ohio and Vanderbilt.
