Madison, NJ - Junior Steve Read (Skillman, NJ/The Lawrenceville School) scored his sixth goal of the year as the men's soccer team defeated Drew 1-0 for their sixth shutout in eight games. The fourth-ranked Blue Jays remain undefeated at 8-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Centennial Conference while the Rangers drop to 4-3-1.
Read's game-winning goal came in the ninth minute when he slipped a shot past Drew keeper Dan Biggers on a breakaway. Johns Hopkins took just two more shots in the first period but senior Gary Kane Jr. (Lansdale, PA/La Salle) had three saves to preserve the 1-0 lead at the half.
Drew's defense limited the Blue Jays to just two second-half shots while the Rangers took 10 shots including one by Joe Favata that went just wide of the left post in the 54th minute. Kane made a diving save of Matt Sidie's straight shot in the 60th minute and held on for his sixth shutout of the year.
The Rangers out-shot the Blue Jays 15-5 while Johns Hopkins held the edge in corner kicks 4-3. Drew's Biggers finished with just two saves and Kane had five for Hopkins, who is now 2-1-2 against Drew in the last five years.
The Blue Jays continue their three-game road trip on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. against Montclair State.
