WASHINGTON, DC - Mary Key scored three of her game-high five goals in the second half to lead #11 Johns Hopkins (11-5) to a 14-10 upset of #6 Georgetown (12-4) at Kehoe Field in the teams' final regular-season game. The Blue Jays led 7-6 at halftime and outscored the Hoyas 7-4 in the second half, clinching their biggest win of the year one day before the NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship selection show.
The win was not only Hopkins' first win over a higher-ranked team this season, but it also tied for the biggest upset in Johns Hopkins Division I women's lacrosse history, matching last season's win over #6 Notre Dame.
The Blue Jays started strong and never relented, as Sarah Walsh and Kelley Putnam scored the first two goals of the game for a 2-0 Hopkins lead after three minutes of action. Mary Key won the first draw control and set up Walsh's first goal, and Putnam scored after picking up a loose ball in front of the net.
Georgetown got on the board with Lauren Redler's goal on breakaway, but Hopkins answered with two straight goals to take a 4-1 lead midway through the half. Voight slipped a pass to Key for the first goal, and Annie Wagner scored the next goal unassisted.
The Hoyas responded with three straight goals to tie the game at four with 7:32 to play, and the teams traded goals for the next 7:30 before Kirby Houck came off the sidelines to score an unassisted goal with two seconds remaining, giving Hopkins a 7-6 lead at the break.
Each team's offensive star shined in the second half, as Key and Georgetown's Coco Stanwick, both Tewaaraton candidates, scored three goals apiece. But while Stanwick received scoring help only from Catherine Elbe's one goal, three Blue Jays besides Key chipped in goals to pace the Hopkins offense.
Stanwick opened the half with an unassisted goal, her second goal of the game, and Key answered with a one-on-one move of her own, sticking her shot in the top corner of goal to regain the one-goal lead for Hopkins. Walsh and Stanwick traded goals for a 9-8 Blue Jay lead with 25:25 remaining.
Johns Hopkins then scored three straight, including two from Key, to take its biggest lead, 12-8, with 16:13 on the clock. After Lacey-Leigh Hentz fired a free-position shot past Georgetown goalie Maggie Koch, Key scored off a bounce shot and, a minute later, blew by her defender, dropped her stick, and shot high for her fifth goal of the game.
Stanwick and Elbe each scored for Georgetown in the next 10 minutes, but Kadie Stamper put in two goals in the final stretch to seal the win for Hopkins.
Key finished with a game-high six points off five goals and an assist, while Walsh added three goals and an assist. Stanwick led the Hoyas with four goals and one assist. Hopkins goalie Lauren Riddick finished with 10 saves, and Georgetown's Koch had 10.
Johns Hopkins awaits a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The selection bracket will be announced Sunday, May 8, at approximately 9 p.m. on CSTV and immediately following on HopkinsSports.com.
