MARYVILLE, TN - The Johns Hopkins defense held Piedmont to just one shot while the offense peppered the Lions with 27 shots and four goals in a 4-0 shutout win at Maryville's Diadora Fall Classic. The Blue Jays improved to 4-0 with the win, and Piedmont fell to 1-3.
Freshman Ethan Mulligan opened the scoring 15:30 into the first half when he scored his first career goal, unassisted. Junior Ben McAbee doubled the score less than ten minutes later with his first goal of the year, coming off an assist from senior Steve Read.
Hopkins scored once more in the first half, as sophomore Nate Ford became the second Blue Jay to record his first collegiate goal in the game. Ford scored unassisted at 33:28 to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead, which they took into halftime.
Johns Hopkins out-shot Piedmont 19-0 and had a 5-0 advantage on corner kicks in the first half. Piedmont's junior goalkeeper, Patrick Ratigan, made seven first-half saves to keep the Lions within three.
The Blue Jays continued to dominate in the second half, allowing just one shot by sophomore Drew Griffin, and taking eight more themselves. Freshman Nicholas Gauna scored his second goal of the year off an assist from classmate Malcolm Stewart 4:32 into the period to make it 4-0, and neither team scored again for the final 40:28.
Ratigan finished with 10 saves for Piedmont, while junior Ryan Bradley made one save and earned his first solo shutout for Hopkins.
The Blue Jays return to action in the Diadora Fall Classic tomorrow, Sunday, September 11, at 1 p.m. Hopkins faces host Maryville, which enters the game 2-1.
