MARYVILLE, TN - Freshman Nicholas Gauna scored two unassisted first-half goals to help the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team defeat the host Scots 2-0 and win the Diadora Fall Classic at Maryville on Sunday. Gauna, who finished with three goals in the two games, was named the tournament MVP.
The win improved the Blue Jays to 5-0 overall and was the third shutout of the year, including the second straight. Hopkins defeated Piedmont 4-0 in the first game of the Diadora Fall Classic on Saturday. The Blue Jays have now won 24 consecutive regular season games dating back to the 2003 season.
Gauna scored at 10:48 and 27:00 to give Johns Hopkins the early lead over Maryville, and the Blue Jay defense did the rest in shutting out the Scots.
Hopkins finished with 13 shots, led by Gauna's five shots on goal, while Maryville took seven shots, none of which challenged junior goalkeeper Dan Coble. In his second win and second shutout of the year, Coble did not need to make a single save. Maryville's Adam Gutzman made four saves in goal for the Scots, who fell to 2-2 this year.
The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, September 17, at 3 p.m., when they begin Centennial Conference play at Muhlenberg.
