SALISBURY, MD - Junior Lynette Sgrignoli scored four goals and added one assist to lead #1 Salisbury past Johns Hopkins, 8-3, in a non-conference field hockey matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays fell to 2-3 while the Sea Gulls improved to 5-0 overall this year.

Salisbury, the two-time defending national champion, has now won 39 straight games and has defeated Hopkins in the last six meetings.

Sgrignoli, who scored five goals in her first four games this season, opened the game's scoring when she fired in her first goal off a pass from junior Megan Powell just two minutes into action. She sandwiched her next two goals, both unassisted, in between a goal from junior Sarah Tracey for her first hat trick of the year. Salisbury led 4-0 with over 56 minutes to play.

Johns Hopkins' leading scorer, sophomore Sarah Bender, put Hopkins on the scoreboard with 13:29 remaining in the first half when junior Amy Soergel found her open in front of the goal. Neither team scored for the rest of the half, and Salisbury entered the break ahead 4-1. The Sea Gulls dominated the Blue Jays in shots (12-2) and corners (5-1) at halftime.

In the second period, Salisbury again scored just two minutes onto the field as Powell assisted senior Brittany Elliott's eighth goal of the year. Sgrignoli set up junior Abby Rowe 30 seconds later for a 6-1 Sea Gull lead with 32:07 left on the clock.

Sgrignoli's final point came less than five minutes later when she scored her fourth goal, and third unassisted, at 42:11. Trailing 7-1, the Blue Jays managed consecutive goals from sophomore Lucy Webster and senior Meighan Roose to get within four, 7-3, with just under 12 minutes to play.

Freshman Leah Horton and sophomore Lori Visklocky assisted Webster's goal, the first of her career, at 54:14 before Horton recorded her second assist of the game on Roose's goal at 58:03.

Salisbury's Elliott scored once more off an assist by Rowe with 8:21 remaining for the 8-3 final.

The Sea Gulls finished with a 29-6 lead in shots and a 13-9 advantage in corners. Sophomore Dayna Eng made 12 saves in goal for Hopkins, while Salisbury sophomore Maria Ramoundos needed just three saves to earn the win.

The Blue Jays return to action this Saturday, September 17, when they host St. Mary's (MD) at 4 pm.
