WEST CHESTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team defeated The College of New Jersey, 223-127, but dropped a 204-160 decision to host West Chester in a two-day tri-meet at West Chester's Graham Natatorium. West Chester finished fifth at last season's NCAA Division II Championships and the split leaves the Blue Jays with a 5-5 overall record on the year.
Hopkins picked up five individual first-place finishes and had three of its relays finish second to fuel its efforts. Senior Sean Kim (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) was the only double-winner for Hopkins as he finished first in both the 100 back (52.93) and 200 fly (1:56.20). Kim was also a member of the second-place 400-medley relay team.
Other individual winners for the Blue Jays included sophomore Ryan Kim (Seoul, South Korea/Georgetown Prep) in the 200 back (1:56.48), senior Zane Hamilton (Chattanooga, TN/McCallie) in the 200 breast (2:10.98) and junior Dave Strickland (Houston, TX/Strake Jesuit College Prep) in the 200 free (2:10.98).
A key for the Blue Jays in the meet was the depth the team demonstrated. Strickland led a one-two-three finish in the 200 free as junior Rich Guerard (Chatham, NJ/Morristown-Beard) placed second (1:45.74) and freshman Kyle Foust (Madison, WI/West) was third (1:47.05). Ryan Kim led a two-three-four finish in the 200 IM as he clocked in at 1:59.13 to place second, while freshman John Kegelman (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) was third (2:00.65) and sophomore Matt Fedderly (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) was fourth (2:00.69). Fedderly added a second-place finish in the 200 back (2:11.34).
The Blue Jays return to action next Saturday at Washington & Lee before traveling to Ohio to face perennial Division III power Kenyon on February 4.
