SWARTHMORE, PA - Summer Spicer scored with a minute left in the first overtime to lead Swarthmore (8-3, 3-1) to a 3-2 upset of #19 Johns Hopkins (6-5, 2-1) in Centennial Conference action Tuesday night. The loss snapped the Blue Jays' five-game win streak. Hopkins played in back-to-back overtime games for the first time in four years.
The Garnet took an early lead over the visiting Blue Jays, when Abigail Fischer scored just 87 seconds into the game. Spicer took a hard shot from outside the circle and Fischer tipped it in for the score. Hopkins answered on a nearly identical play 12:35 into the game. Sophomore Katie Wong (Los Angeles, Ca/Harvard-Westlake) fired off a hard shot and sophomore Adair Landy (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) tipped it past Garnet goalie Karen Lorang for her seventh of the season.
Swarthmore took a 2-1 lead with just 1:44 to go until the break. Spicer scored her first of the night off a long shot from the top of the circle. Ten minutes into the second half, junior Sarah Bender (Mattapoisett, MA/Tabor Academy) had a fast-break opportunity. She beat her defender, but Lorang came charging out of the goal to snuff the play. The Blue Jays were awarded a penalty corner and they capitalized. Bender passed the ball to sophomore Emily Miller (Garden City, NY/Garden City) who blasted a shot from the left side. Sophomore Leah Horton (Wayne, PA/Upper Merion Area) tipped the shot into the back of the goal and knotted the score at 2-2.
Hopkins appeared to take a 3-2 lead just four minutes later when Wong batted the ball into the goal through a crowd, but it was disallowed by the officials. The game would remain tied for the final 25 minutes of regulation as both teams pressed. Swarthmore kept the ball in Hopkins' end for the final two minutes of the game, but the Blue Jay defense held strong. With the game undecided after 70 minutes, the teams prepared for overtime. Hopkins possessed the ball in the Swarthmore end for much of the extra period, but could not capitalize off its opportunities. The Garnet took advantage of a penalty corner late in the overtime. Ashley Gunter sent the ball out to Spicer at the top of the circle. Spicer eluded her defender and then ripped a shot that found the right inside of the goal.
Hopkins held a distinct edge in shots (26-6) and penalty corners (23-6). Senior goalie Dayna Eng (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) finished with two saves for the Blue Jays. Lorang finished with seven for the Garnet. The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, October 7 when they visit Franklin & Marshall for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
