NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The eighth ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team saw its season come to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Monday afternoon. Hopkins battled Virginia Wesleyan to a 0-0 tie through double overtime but fell 5-3 in penalty kicks. The loss ends the Blue Jays season at 18-2-1 while Virginia Wesleyan advances to the next round with a record of 17-3-3.
The two teams battled through a fairly evenly played first half of action. Virginia Wesleyan had an opportunity just four minutes in as Kayla Schrumpf hit one square on the net but Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) came up with the save. The Blue Jays had their opportunities in the first half as Jessie McKenzie (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) had two chances sail just wide. Hopkins held a 5-3 advantage in shots at halftime.
Hopkins may have had its best opportunity of the game, 15 minutes into the second half as McKenzie sent a hard shot in on goal and the Virginia Wesleyan keeper was just able to get hand on the ball and punch it over the net.
Virginia Wesleyan, had a golden opportunity in the first overtime as Hopkins was called for a foul in the box giving the Marlins a penalty shot with 6:33 remaining in overtime. Ally Hodgkins fired a shot towards the far post but Guszkowski was able to get in front of the ball and make the save. Molly Steele (Daleville, VA/North Cross) took a shot with five and a half minutes remaining but once again the Marlins keeper was able to make the save.
The second overtime was played primarily in the midfield and the game headed to penalty kicks.
Virginia Wesleyan went first in overtime, as Laura Jackson knocked her opportunity home. McKenzie went first for Hopkins and just missed as her shot hit the far post. Stacy Zeiler gave the Marlins a 2-0 lead before Kaitlin Giannetti (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) made it 2-1. Kelly Donnelly made it 3-1 in favor of the Marlins as Cassandra Vogel (Laurel Hollow, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) tucked one in the top right corner of the net. Courtney Benitez gave Virginia Wesleyan a 4-2 lead before Laurie Baumann (Milford, MI/Greenhills) made it 4-3. Missy Kuhns sealed the deal for the Marlins as she knocked the ball in on the far side to advance Virginia Wesleyan to the next round.
McKenzie, Giannetti, Baumann, along with the Blue Jays other three seniors will graduate but Hopkins returns several top scorers and its starting goaltender for next season's run.
