COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Four different players scored to lead Johns Hopkins past McDaniel 4-1 in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference (CC) tournament on Saturday.
The No. 2 Blue Jays (13-6) jumped out to a 3-1 lead at halftime, while adding an insurance goal in the second half to eliminate the fourth-seeded Green Terror (10-9) and advance to the CC championship game for the fifth time in seven years.
Junior Kristin Strief (Cary, NC/Garden City) recorded two assists and sophomore Adair Landy (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) tallied the eventual game-winning goal for Johns Hopkins. McDaniel's goalkeeper Erika Wawzyanick made 10 saves in the losing effort.
Junior Sarah Bender (Mattapoisett, MA/Tabor Academy) put the Blue Jays on the board with a goal off a penalty corner just 11:27 into the opening half. Senior Amy Soergel (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) started the corner and sent it out to Strief, who stopped the ball for Bender for a 1-0 lead.
Late in the first half, Hopkins quickly took a 3-0 lead scoring two goals in less than a minute. Landy tallied her goal off a deflection from freshman Brittany Bland's (Littleton, CO/Colorado Academy) shot that was saved at the 24:45 mark, while sophomore Emily Miller (Garden City, NY/Garden City) finished a fast-break opportunity thanks to a pass from freshman Andrea Vandersall (Hampton, NH/Winnacunnet) 43 seconds later.
Brooke Dixon made it 3-1, scoring off a penalty corner taken by Jamie Nash and also assisted by Krissy Carls with just 2:59 left on the clock in the first half. The Blue Jays netted their final goal in the 50th minute after sophomore Katie Wong (Los Angeles, CA/Harvard-Westlake) fired her shot past Wawzyanick for a 4-1 lead. Hopkins held a 15-5 shot advantage and a 16-4 margin in penalty corners.
