Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team (5-4, 1-0) won its fourth straight game with a 5-1 upset over #18 Gettysburg (5-3, 1-1) Wednesday afternoon. It was the Blue Jays first win at Homewood over the Bullets since 2001 and the biggest win since 1989 when Hopkins won 4-0. The five goals are the most Hopkins has ever scored against Gettysburg.

Hopkins got on the board early when junior Sarah Bender (Mattapoisett, MA/Tabor Academy) banged home her fifth of the season just 1:58 into the game. Off a Leah Horton (Wayne, PA/Upper Merion Area) penalty corner, junior Kristin Strief (Cary, NC/Garden City) received the ball and passed it to Bender. Hopkins then scored late in the half to take a 2-0 lead and the momentum into the locker room at half. Horton picked up her second assist of the day when she centered the ball from the end line to a wide open Katie Wong (Los Angeles, Ca/Harvard-Westlake). Wong tapped the ball in for her third of the season.

Wong scored her second of the afternoon just six minutes into the second half. Bender passed the ball down to senior Amy Soergel (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) who centered the ball to Wong on the right post. Wong beat Gettysburg goalie Katherine Corkhill to give Hopkins the 3-0 lead. Just over three minutes later, junior Lucy Webster (Greenwich, CT/Deerfield Academy) tallied her first of the season. Freshman Brittany Bland (Littleton, CO/Colorado Academy) passed the ball to Webster off a free hit. Webster wound up and fired off a hard shot from about seven yards out that beat Corkhill.

Gettysburg finally got in the board 54:59 into the game off a strike from Krissy Browning. Maura Downey passed the ball into Browning in front of the goal, who just snuck the ball past Hopkins senior goalie Dayna Eng (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial), cutting the Jays' lead to 4-1. Hopkins got one back less than four minutes later off a rebound shot by freshman Gabi Henn (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunterdon Regional).

Hopkins had the edge in shots (19-11) and penalty corners (13-5). Eng finished with six saves in nearly 63 minutes of play. Freshman Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) came in relief of Eng and made one save. Corkhill finished with seven saves in the loss.

The Blue Jays hit the road for three straight conference games starting this weekend. Hopkins travels to Muhlenberg on Friday, September 29 for 7:00 p.m. match-up.
