BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team improved to 12-3 on the season with five wins on Sunday. The Blue Jays defeated visiting Virginia Tech, Maryland, St. John's (MD), William & Mary and Virginia. Sophomores David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) and Ben Dorfman (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) and senior Thomas Fellows (Beverly, MA/St. John's Prep) each went undefeated in their respective weapons.
Hopkins opened with a dominating 25-2 win over Viriginia Tech. The Blue Jays shutout the Hokies in both the Foil (9-0) and the Epee (9-0) and won the Sabre by a 7-2 score. Hopkins then defeated Maryland 19-8. The Blue Jays once again swept all three weapons, with the Sabre (5-4) the only closely contested weapon.
Hopkins then turned in another dominating performance, defeating St. John's (MD) 25-2. The Blue Jays won the Foil and the Sabre by 8-1 scores and shutout St. John's in the Epee 9-0. Hopkins then won a close match with William & Mary by a 15-12 score. Wins in the Foil (6-3) and the Epee (5-4) helped overcome a 5-4 loss in the Sabre. The Blue Jays closed out the day with a shutout of Virginia, winning 27-0.
Ferguson and Dorfman each went 8-0 in their bouts in the Foil to lead Hopkins in that weapon. Also having strong days were freshman Ian McCue (Yardley, PA/Princeton Day School) (10-2) and sophomore Jimmy Einsiedler (Falmouth, ME/Waynflete School) (9-1). Senior Nick Marchuk (Ringoes, NJ/The Hun School) went 5-2.
In the Epee, the Blue Jays were led by Fellows who went unbeaten at 7-0 on the day. Freshman James Pearse (Concord, MA/Concord Carlisle) went 11-1 and freshman Harry Oppenheim (Weston, FL/University School of NSU) went 10-1. Sophomore Max Mealy (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) went 6-2 on the day while his classmate Dane Schiro (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) went 4-3. In the Sabre, all four Blue Jays had a solid afternoon. Senior Andrew Carney (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) posted an 8-4 mark. Sophomore Matt Ferg (New Orleans, LA/Benjamin Franklin) went 8-3, while his classmate David Hill (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) went 9-3. Sophomore Chris Mayhew (Eagle, ID/Eagle) posted a 7-3 record.
Hopkins returns to action at the Duke Invitational on February 9 in Durham, NC.
