BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's) and junior Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century) combined for nine goals to lead #16 Johns Hopkins to a 15-9 win over UMBC Wednesday afternoon at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays move to 7-5 on the season while the Retrievers fall to 5-8 overall.
Hopkins got on the board early when Key scored on a low shot just 48 seconds in. Freshman Sam Schrum (Pasadena, MD/St. Mary's) gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead just over four minutes later, when she spun around her defender and fired a high shot past UMBC goalie Kate Quick for her 19th of the season. Abbey Swift answered for the Retrievers at the 6:41 mark, making it a one-goal game.
The Blue Jays responded with nearly identical goals from Schwarzmann and Key, pushing the score to 4-1 with 16:55 to play. Once again, UMBC answered, with Kelly Fahey and Meghan Keelan scoring back-to-back goals just 10 seconds apart. Kara Dorr tied the game at 4-4 with 11:16 to play in the half when Keelan fed her the ball from behind the cage for a high shot that beat freshman Lizzie O'Ferrall (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales).
Dorr's goal sparked a seven-goal run by Hopkins that stretched into the second half. Fifth-year senior Sarah Walsh (Port Washington, NY/P.D. Schreiber) ignited the run with her 21st of the season, curling around the right side of the Retrievers' cage and firing a low shot past Quick. Three minutes later, Schwarzmann and Key connected on a fast break after a UMBC turnover and Schwarzmann found the twine for second of the day. Walsh closed out the scoring for the half when she scored on a low shot while falling to the ground with just one second on the clock.
Senior Alex Nolan (Baltimore, MD/Roland Park) put the Blue Jays on the board just 38 seconds into the second, scoring on a free position shot. Schwarzmann netted her third of the day just 3:30 in when junior Kadie Stamper (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) passed on a free position shot, finding Schwarzmann open at the top of the arc. Hopkins once again capitalized on a fast break attempt, this time off a failed clear. Quick threw the ball out of bounds and on the restart sophomore Gina Maranto (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) found a wide-open Key in transition. Key sped to the goal and scored for her third of the season.
Senior Steph Janice (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) pushed the Blue Jays lead to 11-4 with a free position goal at 6:26. UMBC won the ensuing draw and Dorr ended the Hopkins run with her second of the day. Fahey got her second of the day on a free position shot, cutting the lead to five. The Blue Jays called a timeout and responded with four unanswered from Key, Schwarzmann and Maranto. Trailing 15-6 with 5:05 to play, the Retrievers rallied for three straight to end the game, but could get no closer than the 15-9 final score.
Key led all scorers with six points on five goals and one assist. With 349 career points, she now ranks fifth all-time in NCAA Division I history. She also ranks second all-time with 133 career assists. Schwarzmann's four goals and five points are career highs and she now ranks 11th in Hopkins DI history with 44 career goals. Stamper finished with four draw controls, moving her into second place all-time in Hopkins career history.
O'Ferrall tied her career high with nine saves for her third career win. Quick finished with 12 saves in the loss for UMBC. Swift, Dorr and Fahey led the Retrievers with two goals apiece.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 14 when the Virginia Cavaliers visit Homewood Field. Game time is set for noon. The game will be televised live by ESPNU.
