BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Cassandra Vogel's (Laurel Hollow, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) second half goal broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Dickinson on Tuesday night in Baltimore. The Blue Jays (6-2-1, 2-0 CC) won their third straight against the Red Devils (4-6, 0-3 CC).
Hopkins got on the scoreboard first in the 37th minute as the Blue Jays were awarded a corner kick. Sophomore Claire Pelura (Malvern, PA/Episcopal Academy) took the corner kick and crossed a ball to the front of the box that freshman Allie Zazzali (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) headed home. The goal was Zazzali's second of the season as Hopkins out shot Dickinson 10-3 in the first half.
Dickinson got the equalizer just into the second half of play. Sarah Casey found Lisa Nichols with a pass in the 47th minute and Nichols banged it home for her Centennial Conference leading eighth goal of the season. That set the stage for Vogel's game-winner. In the 59th minute, senior Kim Lane (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) took a corner kick and found Vogel who headed the ball home.
Dickinson had its best chance to tie the game in the 80th minute as Molly Schaefer looked to break free and get a shot off but Jane O'Connor (Pittsgrove, NJ/Arthur P. Schalick) and the Blue Jay defense chased her down.
Kailyn Hartmann made nine saves in net for the Red Devils while sophomore Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) posted two saves between the pipes for the Blue Jays. Hopkins out shot Dickinson, 23-5 for the game.
Johns Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 29th for a match at Haverford College. Game time against the Fords is set for 2 p.m.
