BALTIMORE, MD - The #3 Johns Hopkins men's swim team defeated visiting Rowan 159-95 on Saturday morning. The Blue Jays, who improve to 4-2, won 13 of the 14 events. The Profs fall to 4-2 on the season. Brad Test (Dresher, PA/Germantown Academy), Alex Hsieh (Beijing, China/International School of Beijing) and Neil Mahoney (Minneapolis, MN/Minnetonka) each picked up two wins on the day.
Hopkins opened the meet by sweeping the top three spots in the 200 Medley Relay. Mahoney, Brian Keeley (Rockford, MI/Rockford), Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and Teddy Bulakul (Bangakok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) swam to a 1:37.95 win. John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose), Matt Fedderly (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh), Bob Sershon (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) and Test took second with a time of 1:38. 23. Hsieh, John Kegelman (Yorktown, VA/Tabb), AJ Blood (McClean, VA/Sidwell Friends) and Derek Ems (Voorhees, NJ/Moorestown) completed the sweep, finishing in third with a time of 1:39.95.
Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) then turned in a dominating performance in the 1650 Free, winning in 16:48.38 - 1:11.07 ahead of Rowan's James Sheerin. Hopkins then swept the top three spots in the 200 Free and the 50 Back. Test won the 200 Free in a time of 1:44.60, followed by Mahoney (1:46.91) and Thomas (1:47.01). Hsieh won the 50 Back (24.99), followed by Kegelman (26.01) and Keeley (26.17).
Fedderly and Frank Long (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall) then finished one-two in the 50 Breast, as Fedderly won the event with a time of 28.29 with Long finishing in 28.97. Moisiades and Sershon then tied for first in the 100 Fly as each finished in 53.77. Mahoney and Blood finished one-two in the 50 Free, coming in at 21.85 and 22.35 respectively. In the 100 Free, the Blue Jays once again swept the top three spots, with Mahoney getting the win in 49.11. Bulakul took second (49.47) and Chris Whelan (Tewksbury, NJ/Delbarton) took third (50.59).
Hsieh picked up his second win as he and Kegelman finished one-two in the 100 Back. Hsieh finished in 54.22 and Kegelman in 55.96. Hopkins repeated the feat in the 100 Breast and the 500 Free. Keeley won the 100 Breast (59.97) followed by Fedderly in second (1:00.11). David Postetter (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) took the win in the 500 Free (4:53.69) with Thomas claiming second (4:58.59). Hopkins swam exhibitions in the final three events - the 50 Fly, 20o IM and 200 Free Relay.
Hopkins returns to the pool next weekend when #20 TCNJ and West Chester visit Baltimore. The tri-meet is set to begin at 5:00 pm on Friday, January 18. The meet will continue at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 19.
