#7 Johns Hopkins Downs Rowan 137-118

BALTIMORE, MD - The #7 Johns Hopkins women's swim team returned from its Florida training trip and defeated visiting Rowan 137-118 Saturday morning. The Blue Jays won 10 of the 14 events while swimming three exhibitions. Hopkins is now 4-2 on the season, while Rowan falls to 4-2.

Hopkins opened up with a big win in the 200 Medley Relay as the team of Erica Pakkala (Lititz, PA/Warwick), Caitlin Dennis (Moorsetown, NJ/Merion Mercy Academy), Lisa Qu (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) and Jackie Rooney (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/The Culver Academies) won by over three seconds with a time of 1:53.76. Kate Hansen (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston), Charlotte Floria (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard), Meagan Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) and Elizabeth Dowdle (Tampa, FL/Academy of the Holy Names) swam to a third place finish with a time of 1:58.25.

The Blue Jays then took second and third in the 1650 Free with Kathleen Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) claiming second (18:11.56) and Mary Claire Kozlowski (Fairfax, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) taking third (18:35.44). Elissa Stautner (Conroe, TX/Oak Ridge), Megan Zepp (Montgomery Village, MD/Stone Ridge) and Michele Palopoli (Gwynedd Valley, PA/Germantown Academy) led JHU to a sweep of the 200 Free. Stautner took first in 1:57.65.

Pakkala then won the 50 Free with a time of 29.45 while Jill Barclay (Andover, MA/North Andover) finished in third (30.61). Dennis followed that with a win in the 50 Breast (33.53). The wins continued in the 100 Fly as Qu won the event with a time of 1:01.35. M. Heslin finished in third with a time of 1:03.97. Rooney, Dowdle and Val Neff-Rasmussen (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) then took second through fourth in the 50 Free.

Palopoli and Dowdle followed with a one-two finish in the 100 Free, with Palopoli taking the win in 56.58. Pakkala and Barclay turned the same trick in the 100 Back, finishing one-two. Dennis picked up her second win of the day, winning the 100 Back with a finish of 1:11.84. Stautner then grabbed her second win, finishing the 500 Free in 5:13.66, more than eight seconds ahead of Rowan's Samantha Edwards. Hopkins swam exhibitions in the final three events, the 50 Fly, 200 IM and 200 Free Relay.

Hopkins returns to the pool next weekend when TCNJ and West Chester visit Baltimore. The tri-meet is set to begin at 5:00 pm on Friday, January 18. The meet will continue at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 19.
