PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team defeated Sacred Heart (20-7) but lost to North Carolina (15-12) on Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational. The Blue Jays are now 7-2 as the loss to the Tar Heels heading into the Penn State Invitational on January 26.
Hopkins swept all three weapons in the win over Sacred Heart. Seniors Jake Sand (Laverock, PA/Germantown Friends) and Aaron Fernandes (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn), along with freshmen Michael Fellows (Beverly, MA/St. John's Prep) and Max Wieder (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) combined for a 7-2 win in the Sabre. The Blue Jays also picked up a 7-2 win in the Foil. Junior Ben Dorfman (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) led the way winning all three of his bouts. Junior David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) went 2-0, while sophomore Paul Nunley (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) went 1-0. In the Epee, JHU won 6-3 with junior Dan Zielinski (Bernardville, NJ/¬¬Bernardville), sophomore Harry Oppenheim (Weston, FL/University School of NSU) and freshman Nick Krywopusk (Richboro, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)) all picking up two wins.
In the match against the Tar Heels, North Carolina won the Sabre (5-4) and the Epee (7-2), while JHU took the Foil (6-3). The Sabre was a close match, coming down to the final bout between UNC's David Winer and JHU's Wieder. Winer won the bout to clinch the match for the Tar Heels. Wieder and Fellows each won two bouts. Dorfman and Einsidler each won both their bouts to lead the Blue Jays to a win in the Foil. However, in the Epee, just Oppenheim and Krywopusk picked up wins in the loss.
