MADISON, NJ – Johns Hopkins went a combined 106-11 to win its fourth straight and 34
th overall Mid-Atlantic Fencing Collegiate Association (MACFA) Championship on Sunday. The Blue Jays also won the Sabre and Foil squad titles and
Ethan Insler won the individual Epee title.
Hopkins dominated in the Sabre, winning 37 of 39 bouts to claim its fourth straight title and 32
nd overall.
Noah Zeng went 12-1 in pool A and earned the number two seed for the individual championship.
Neil Pandey finished pool B with an 11-1 record and was seeded fourth. And in pool C,
Alex Jeffords won all 13 of his bouts to earn the 10 seed. Pandey finished as the runner-up, going 3-1 in the individual competition. Jeffords finished in a tie for third (2-1) and Zeng placed sixth (1-1).
In the Foil, the Blue Jays nearly matched their Sabre counterparts, going 36-3 on the day to win their fourth straight title. It is the 22
nd MACFA Foil title in team history.
Josh Sima won 11 of his 13 bouts in pool A and was seeded second in the individual competition.
Spencer Grossman Smisek went 12-1 in pool B and earned the five seed. In pool C,
Yi Peng Sha went unbeaten at 13-0 to earn the 10 seed. Sima finished in second (3-1) in the individual championship, with Grossman Smisek placing sixth (1-1) and Sha eighth (0-1).
Hopkins finished second in the Epee, winning 33 of 39 bouts.
Jorge Gana went 11-2 in pool A and earned the number two seed in the individual competition.
Jamie Knox won 11 of 13 bouts and was seeded fifth while Insler finished 11-2 in pool C and was seeded 13
th. Insler won all four bouts in the individual championship, knocking off the number one seed in the semifinals, to win the program's 19
th individual Epee title. Gana finished in fifth place (1-1) and Knox finished in sixth (1-1).
Johns Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 7 at the NCAA Regional Championship.
Notes: The 34 conference titles are the second most of any Johns Hopkins team.
