COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team (0-2) swam against a Division I opponent for the second straight week, falling 167-105 to Maryland. Junior John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose) swept the Backstroke events to lead the Blue Jays.
Hopkins opened with a second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:36.09. Swimming the relay were Thomas, freshman Tim Nam (Forest Hills, NY/Bronx High School of Science), senior Bob Sershon (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) and freshman Eddy Zandee (Kailua, HI/Punahou).
Thomas followed that with a win in the 100 Back in 52.25, while Nam took third in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:00.30. Junior Teddy Bulakul (Bangkok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) placed third in the 100 Free in a time of 48.31. Thomas then completed his sweep of the Backstroke events, winning the 200 Back in 1:55.33. Nam also took third in the 200 Breast, finishing in 2:10.84.
Maryland then began swimming exhibitions with the 100 Fly. Sershon placed first with a time of 52.19, followed by junior Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) in second and sophomore John Coia (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) in third. Nam followed with a first place finish in the 200 IM, coming in at 2:00.23. Freshman Patrick Lynch (Surrey, England/ACS Cobham International School) followed in second and sophomore Chris Razavi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) finished in third.
Hopkins closed out the meet with a first place finish in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:26.35. Zandee, Thomas, Bulakul and junior Chris Whelan (Haddonfield, NJ/Delbarton School) swam the relay for the Blue Jays.
Johns Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 1 as Franklin & Marshall visits Baltimore. The meet is slated for an 11:00 am start.
