COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team took on a Division I opponent for the second straight week on Friday afternoon, losing to Maryland, 146.5-91.5. The Blue Jays slip to 0-2 on the season, while today's meet was the season-opener for the Terps.
Hopkins opened with a second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, just in 1:37.59. Swimming the relay were senior John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose), sophomore Tim Nam (Forest Hills, NY/Bronx High School of Science), seniors Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and Teddy Bulakul (Bangkok, Thailand/Hotchkiss). Sophomore Stephen Niemiec (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) followed with a fifth-place finish in the 200 Free in 1:48.44.
Thomas then won the 50 Back with a time of 24.37, while Bulakul took third in 25.41. Nam followed that with a third-place finish in the 50 Breast (27.98). Freshman Carter Gisriel (Lutherville, MD/Towson) took fourth in the 100 Fly in a time of 54.01. Sophomore Eddy Zandee (Kailua, HI/Punahou) finished second in the 50 Free in 21.75, while freshman Tyler Woods (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) took fourth in 22.16.
Bulakul was the Blue Jays top finisher in the 100 Free with a time of 48.17 for fifth place. Thomas then completed his sweep of the Back events, taking the 100 Back in 52.21, nearly two seconds ahead of Maryland's Alex Spina. Nam placed second in the 100 Breast in 1:0034. Freshman Phillip Hall (Belleview, FL/Vanguard) placed third in the 500 Free in 4:58.13. Zandee grabbed his second, second-place finish of the day in the 50 Fly with a time of 23.87. Maryland then swam exhibitions for the final two events.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 31 as the Blue Jays travel to Lancaster, PA to take on Franklin & Marshall. The meet is slated to begin at 11:00 am.
