LANCASTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team won nine of the first 12 events en route to a 156-101 win over Franklin & Marshall Saturday. The Blue Jays pick up their first win of the season in their first dual meet against a Division III team this season. Today's meet was the season opener for the Diplomats.
Hopkins opened with a win in the 200 Medley Relay, finishing in 1:38.67. Senior Neil Mahoney (Excelsior, MN/Minnetonka), sophomore Tim Nam (Forest Hills, NY/Bronx High School of Science), freshman Nick Schmidt (Bells, TN/University School of Jackson) and senior Teddy Bulakul (Bangkok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) swam the relay for the Blue Jays. The relay team of freshman Dylan Coggin (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy), senior Chris Razavi (Fairport, NY/Fairport), sophomore Eddy Zandee (Kailua, HI/Punahou) and freshman Tyler Woods (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) took third in 1:40.20.
Hopkins then swept the top three spots in the 1000 Free with freshman Kevin Morlock (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall) took first (10:02.72), followed by freshman Phillip Hall (Belleview, FL/Vanguard) (10:21.87) and sophomore Markus Kowalsky (St. Louis Park, MN/International School of Minnesota) (10:37.39). Mahoney followed with a win in the 200 Free (1:49.58), with freshman Durgesh Das (Houston, TX/James E. Taylor) taking second (1:50.37). Coggin picked up a third-place finish in the 100 Back with a time of 56.18.
Nam and freshman Jason Ho (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) then went two-three in the 100 Breast in 1:00.97 and 1:02.61, respectively. The Blue Jays followed by sweeping the top three spots in the 200 Fly. Schmidt took first (2:01.95), followed by sophomore Stephen Niemiec (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) (2:03.40) and Morlock (2:03.57). In the 50 Free, Zandee and Woods combined for a one-two finish. Zandee took the win in 21.85, with Woods finishing in second in 22.46. Bulakul and Woods then turned the same trick in the 100 Free. Bulakul won in 48.21 and Woods picked up another second-place finish (49.14).
Nam followed with a win in the 200 Breast in 2:13.00. Razavi and Ho followed in third and fourth in 2:19.00 and 2:20.05, respectively. Hopkins completed another sweep of the top three spots, finishing one-two-three in the 500 Free. Morlock picked up the win in 4:57.75. He was followed by Hall (5:01.89) and sophomore Patrick Lynch (Surrey, England/ACS Cobham Inernational School) (5:05.39). The Blue Jays did it again in the 100 Fly. Schmidt picked up the win (53.29), with freshman Carter Gisriel (Lutherville, MD/Towson) taking second (54.01) and freshman Connor Murphy (Cheshire, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) taking third (56.07). Hopkins swam exhibitions for the final two events.
Hopkins returns to action at the annual Thomas Murphy Invitational at Loyola on November 6 and 7. The invitational begins Friday at 5:00 pm.
