SALISBURY, MD - The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team saw its season-opening win streak come to an end Wednesday evening in a 5-1 loss at second-ranked Salisbury. The Blue Jays slip to 4-1 on the season while the Sea Gulls remain unbeaten at 6-0.
Salisbury put a pair on the board early, with goals from Kandice Hancock and Lauren Correll, to take a 2-0 lead just 5:50 in. Hancock scored at 5:27 off a penalty stroke, while Correll converted a pass from Beverly Beladino just 23 seconds later. Correll scored her second goal of the game at 26:20 on an assist from Hancock as the Sea Gulls took a 3-0 lead into the half.
Junior Ariana Branchini (Old Lyme, CT/Choate) put the Blue Jays on the board just over 10 minutes into the second half, scoring her first of the season on a penalty stroke to make it a 3-1 game. Salisbury answered just over a minute later, as Hancock scored her second of the day to push the Sea Gull's lead back to three. Alison Bloodsworth then closed out the scoring at 57:49.
Senior Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) finished with seven saves and junior Sydney Greenberg (Longmeadow, MA/Suffield Academy) had a defensive save for the Blue Jays. Anna Cooke made two saves and Emily Ellenberger had a defensive save for the Sea Gulls.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 19 in the Blue Jays home opener. JHU will take on 13th-ranked Gettysburg in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams. Game time is slated for 1:00 pm at Homewood Field.
