EWING, NJ - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team got back into action with a tri-meet at The College of New Jersey. JHU defeated Division II West Chester (202-162), but lost to host TCNJ (183-175). The Blue Jays are now 2-4 in dual meets this season.
Hopkins opened the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay, with senior John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose), sophomore Timothy Nam (Forest Hills, NY/Bronx High School of Science), freshman Nick Schmidt (Bells, TN/University School of Jackson) and senior Teddy Bulakul (Bangakok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) combining for a time of 1:36.52. Thomas led off the relay with a season-best time of 24.22 in the 50 Back split.
Senior Neil Mahoney (Minneapolis, MN/Minnetonka) claimed third in the 200 Free with a season-best time of 1:44.93. Sophomore Markus Kowalsky (Shorewood, MN/International School of Minnesota) then took fourth in the 400 IM, clocking in at 4:19.55 - a season-best time. In the 100 Fly, Schmidt swam to a second place finish with a time of 52.21. Thomas won the 100 Back with an NCAA B Qualifying time of 51.46 - his fastest time this season. Freshman Dylan Coggin (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) took third with a time of 54.98 - a season-best time.
Freshman Kevin Morlock (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall) claimed third in the 500 Free with a season-best time of 4:49.14. Hopkins then took second in the 200 Free Relay, clocking in at 1:27.21. Sophomore Eddy Zandee (Kailua, HI/Punahou), Mahoney, freshman Tyler Woods (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) and Bulakul swam the relay. In the 100 Breast, Nam clocked in with a season-best time of 1:00.03, which was good for second place. Hopkins closed out Friday night's action with a second place finish in the 800 Free Relay. Schmidt, sophomore Stephen Niemiec (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams), Thomas and Mahoney combined to finish in 7:05.89.
Morlock opened up Saturday's action with a win and a season-best time in the 1650 Free, clocking in at 16:47.03. Freshman Phillip Hall (Belleview, FL/Vanguard) claimed third with a time of 16:54.89. Hopkins picked up another relay win, taking the 400 Medley with a time of 3:28.90. Thomas, Nam, Schmidt and Bulakul combined for the win. Thomas swam a time of 50.97 in the 100 Back split, besting his showing in the 100 Back on Friday. Mahoney then won the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.73, while Niemiec finished in third (1:57.71).
Zandee finished third in the 50 Free with a time of 22.17. Schmidt and freshman Connor Murphy (Cheshire, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) then took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 Fly. Schmidt clocked in at 1:59.58, followed by Murphy in 2:00.62. Mahoney followed that up with a second place finish in the 100 Free, finishing in a season-best 47.61. Thomas then completed his sweep of the back events, winning the 200 Back by more than five-and-a-half seconds. He clocked in at 1:53.26, a season-best and NCAA B time. Freshman Durgesh Das (Houston, TX/James E. Taylor) followed in second with a time of 1:58.85.
Nam won the 200 Breast with a season-best time of 2:11.12. The Blue Jays followed that up with a win and a season-best time of 3:08.81 in the 400 Free Relay. Mahoney, Bulakul, Schmidt and Thomas swam the relay. Mahoney's split of 47.36 was a season-best.
Hopkins returns to action next Saturday, as St. Mary's visits the Newton White Athletic Center for a 4:00 pm meet.
