BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's soccer team got one goal and one assist from freshman Kelly Baker and one goal from classmate Pamela Vranis as the 12th-ranked Blue Jays knocked off visiting Farmingdale State, 2-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships at Homewood Field Saturday. The win improves JHU's record to 17-3-1 on the year and 6-1 in NCAA Tournament games at home in the last three years. The Rams had their season come to an end with a 17-5 record.
The Blue Jays pressured the Rams from the outset, but it wasn't until the 30th minute that they could break through against Farmingdale goalie Amanda Maass. Baker, who had come in off the bench, quickly made an impact as she collected a loose ball at the top of the box and slid a perfect pass to Vranis on the left side of the box, where she slipped a shot just inside the right post for her sixth goal of the season.
The 1-0 lead held for just under 10 minutes before Baker added her own tally, this one off an assist from classmate Amanda Yaccarino. The freshmen worked a perfect give-and-go and Baker picked the far post with a left-footed shot to give the Blue Jays what proved to be an insurmountable 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Meredith Maguire got the start in goal for the Blue Jays and posted four saves in picking up the shutout. Maass colleted 11 saves in the game for the Rams, who entered the game averaging just under four goals per game.
JHU held a 22-4 advantage in shots and took five of the seven corner kicks in the game.
