COLUMBUS, OH - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team opened its season on Saturday at the annual Ohio State Duals on Saturday, November 6. Hopkins picked up wins over Cleveland State (19-8) and Caltech (26-1) but fell to host Ohio State (19-8).
Against Cleveland State, the Blue Jays the swept all three weapons to take the win. In the Sabre, senior Max Wieder and sophomore Nicolas Barbera each went 3-0, while sophomore Sid Menon clinched the 8-1 win for Hopkins. The Blue Jays edged the Vikings, 5-4, in the Foil. Freshman Evan Stafford and sophomore Ben Wasser each won a pair of matches and sophomore Mehdi Pedramfard won the ninth and final bout to give Hopkins the win. Senior Nick Krywopusk won all three of his bouts in the Epee to lead the Blue Jays to a 6-3 win over the Vikings. Freshman Jay DeYoung won a pair of bouts and freshman Richard Bram won the clinching bout.
Hopkins dropped just one bout en route to a 26-1 win over Caltech. Wieder, Menon and senior Michael Fellows each won a bout in the Sabre as the Beavers had just one fencer in the weapon. In the Foil, Staffard and Pedram each won their two bouts, while Pedramfard went 1-1. And in the Epee, the only weapon where the Beavers had three fencers, the Blue Jays swept all nine bouts.
Against the host Buckeyes, which finished fourth at the 2010 NCAA Championships, the Blue Jays were swept in all three weapons. Ohio State won easily in the Epee, 8-1, but just edged Hopkins in the Sabre, 5-4, and the Foil, 6-3. Wieder led the Blue Jays in the Sabre with a pair of wins, while Barbera and Fellows each picked up a win. In the Foil, Stafford also won two of his bouts to lead the way and Wasser had one win. Krywopusk won the lone bout for Hopkins in the Epee.
For the day, Wieder led the Blue Jays in the Sabre with eight wins, while Stafford and Krywopusk each had seven in the Foil and Epee, respectively. In addition to the dual meets, there was a small competition for the top individual performers. In the Sabre, Wieder finished in second, followed by Barbera in third. Wasser took third in the Foil and Kyrwopusk tied for third in the Epee.
Hopkins returns to action next weekend at the Garret Penn State Open, November 13-14.
