EVANSTON, IL - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team finished with a 4-6 record at the Northwestern Duals January 30-31. The Blue Jays picked up wins over Cleveland State, Caltech, Lawrence, Detroit and Northwestern. Hopkins dropped bouts to #2 Notre Dame, #3 Ohio State, #4 Princeton, Stanford and Wayne State.
In the loss to the second-ranked Irish, senior Ian McCue (Yardley, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)) led the Blue Jays with a pair of wins in the Foil. In the Sabre, junior Max Wieder (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and freshman Nicolas Barbera (Mountainside, NJ/Union County) each picked up a win, while junior Nick Krywopusk (Richboro, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)) and sophomore Kenny Felsenstein (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) each picked up a win in the Epee.
Against Ohio State, Barbera and McCue each won a pair of bouts, in the Sabre and Foil, respectively. While against Stanford, Krywopusk has a pair of wins in the Sabre. And in the Foil, senior Paul Nunley (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees), senior Harry Oppenheim (Weston, FL/University School of NSU), freshman Ben Wasser (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) and McCue each picked up a win.
Against Wayne State, Hopkins picked up a narrow 5-4 win in the Sabre on the strength of four wins from Wieder and Barbera. In the Epee, Krywopusk won a pair of bouts, while Oppenheim had two wins in the Foil. In the win over Caltech, Hopkins swept the Sabre and Foil and won a narrow 5-5 bout in the Epee. Krywopusk clinched the win in the Epee with his win in the ninth bout.
In the win over Lawrence, Hopkins won the Foil, 9-0, and Sabre, 8-1. In the Foil, both Oppenheim and McCue won all three of their bouts to lead the way. And in the Sabre, Weider won all three of his. While a 6-3 win in the Epee was clinched by senior Chris Mihalsky's (Edmond, OK/Edmond) win in the eighth bout. Against Detroit, the Blue Jays picked up commanding wins in the Sabre (8-1) and the Epee (9-0), but lost in the Foil (5-4). In the Epee, Kevin Hughes (Oreland, PA/La Salle College High School), Krywopusk and Mihalsky swept all nine bouts. And in the Sabre, Barbara and Wieder combined to go 6-0.
Against host Northwestern, Hopkins won the Sabre and the Foil by identical 6-3 scores, but lost the Epee by the same score. McCue led the Blue Jays in the Foil with three wins and clinched the bout with his win in the seventh bout. In the Sabre, Barbarer and Wieder each had two wins for the Blue Jays. Against fourth-ranked Princeton, Wieder picked up the Blue Jays lone win.
For the weekend, Wieder picked up 19 wins to lead the Blue Jays in that weapon and now has 248 career wins. That moves him into 10th place all-time in school history, among all weapons, and third among Sabrists. Barbera finished just shy of Wieder with 18 wins on the weekend. In the Foil, McCue led Hopkins with 17 wins and now has 97 career wins. And in the Epee, Krywopusk was tops with 16 wins to push his career record to 189-103 and move him into fifth in school history in the Epee.
Hopkins returns to action at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional, scheduled for March 13 and hosted by Drew University in Madison, NJ.
