OWINGS MILLS, MD - Senior defender Sarah Gieszl scored her first career goal and freshman forward Pamela Vranis tallied a goal and an assist as the eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team upended Stevenson, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Caves Athletic Complex. The Blue Jays have now posted back-to-back shutouts and improve to 5-1 on the year, while the Mustangs drop to 3-3.
Hopkins got on the board early when Gieszl headed home what would prove to be the game-winner off a Vranis corner kick in the 13th minute to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
Just over ten minutes later, Vranis notched her second goal of the season, bending a shot past Stevenson goalkeeper Brittany Ross after a give-and-go with senior Sara Tankard to lift JHU to a 2-0 advantage. The assist raised Tankard's team-leading total to five on the year.
The Blue Jays held the advantage over the Mustangs in shots (17-8) and corner kicks (6-2). Sophomore Meredith Maguire and junior Kristen Redsun each played a half at goalkeeper for the Blue Jays in the shutout victory. Maguire tallied three saves in the first half, while Redsun notched two saves in the second stanza. Ross recorded three saves in the first half for the Mustangs, before backup goalkeeper Lauren Weitzman came on in relief after the intermission, recording one save in the loss.
The Blue Jays return to action Saturday, September 18 to host Washington College at 1 pm in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.
