Barbera Eclipses 100-Win Milestone at Haverford Invitational

HAVERFORD, PA - Junior Nicolas Barbera earned his 100th career win and the Johns Hopkins men's fencing team went 2-2 at the Haverford Invitational on November 19. Hopkins earned wins over Rutgers (15-12) and Lafayette (19-8) but dropped decisions to Drew (15-12) and Cornell (17-10). The Blue Jays were forced to forfeit thee Sabre bouts in each of its matches due to an injury.

Against Drew, Barbera and freshman Paul Vitale each went 1-2 in the Sabre as the Blue Jays fell to the Rangers, 7-2. Hopkins rolled to an 8-1 win in the Epee, behind 3-0 outings by freshman Jonathan Frame and sophomore Jay DeYoung. Drew then took the Foil by a 7-2 score to win the match. Sophomore Evan Stafford and freshman Zachary Goodman each won one bout for the Blue Jays.

In the win over Rutgers, Barbera and Vitale again went a combined 2-4 as the Scarlet Knights won 7-2. The Blue Jays pulled out a 5-4 win in the Foil as junior Ben Wasser went 3-0 and won the clinching bout. Goodman went 2-1 in his bouts with the Knights. Hopkins earned another dominating win in the Epee, winning 8-1, behind 3-0 showings from freshman Alex Szigeti and DeYoung.

Barbera won two of his three bouts against Cornell in a 7-2 loss to the Big Red. Cornell also won the Foil by a 7-2 score as Stafford and Wasser each won one bout. Frame, Szigeti and DeYoung then each won two bouts to lead the Blue Jays to a 6-3 win in the Epee.

Against Lafayette, Barbera and Vitale each went 3-0 as Hopkins won the Sabre, 6-3. Stafford and Goodman turned the same track in the Foil, leading the Blue Jays to an 8-1 win over the Leopards. In the Epee, DeYoung led Hopkins with a 3-0 outing and won the clinching bout as JHU edged Lafayette, 5-4.

Barbera is now 17-6 on the season and is the winningest active fencer for the Blue Jays with a career record of 101-80. And Vitale is now 14-9 on the season. DeYoung went 11-1 on the day and is now 19-4 on the year, while Frame and Szigeti each went 8-4. Goodman and Wasser each went 6-6 and are 15-8, while Stafford went 5-7. Goodman and Stafford are now each 15-8 on the season.

Hopkins returns to action on January 21 at the Philadelphia Invitational.
