BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team beat cross-town rival Loyola University, 210-152, at the annual Thomas Murphy Invitational Saturday. The Blue Jays won by 58 points despite not competing in the diving events and swimming the final event as exhibition. Hopkins improves to 2-0 on the season as they improve to 9-4 all-time against the Greyhounds.
Hopkins opened with a one-two finish in the 400 Medley Relay. The team of freshman Dylan Davis, senior Timothy Nam and juniors Nick Schmidt and Dylan Coggin finished in 3:26.64. Freshman Ryan Cunningham, sophomore Joe Acquaviva, junior Carter Gisriel and sophomore Anthony Lordi swam a time of 3:28.51 to take second place. Sophomore Will Kimball followed with a win in the 500 Free as he touched in 4:51.09. Junior Alec Contag then took third in 4:52.75.
Nam then won the first of his three individual events on the day as he edged out Cunningham for first in the 200 IM. Nam clocked in with a career-high time of 1:57.35, while Cunningham touched in 1:57.96. Lordi led a contingent of Blue Jays that swept the top three spots in the 50 Free as he finished in a career-best time of 21:04. Senior Eddy Zandee followed in second with a time of 21.44 to just beat out junior Dylan Coggin, who touched in 21.48.
The Blue Jays claimed second through fourth in the 800 Free Relay. Schmidt, senior Dan Raynard, Kimball and Cunningham swam a time of 7:02.13 to finish in second. Senior Stephen Niemiec, senior Christopher Price, sophomore David Woodford and freshman Aaron Katrikh took third in 7:13.40. And the team of junior Tyler Woods, senior Markus Kowalsky and freshmen Justin Kwong and Gregory Kogut finished in fourth with a time of 7:16.32.
Hopkins then won the 200 Free Relay as the team of Lordi, Gisriel, Coggin and Zandee finished in 1:24.41 to win by more than two and a half seconds. Acquaviva finished in second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:15.66, while Davis took fourth in 4:18.15. In the 100 Fly, Schmidt and Gisriel combined to finish one-two. Schmidt took the top spot as he touched in 51.63, just edging out Gisriel who finished in 51.68. Kimball and Cunningham went two-three in the 200 Free, finishing in 1:44.69 and 1:46.08, respectively.
Davis then led a host of Blue Jays that finished first through fifth in the 100 Back. Davis took the top spot in 52.75, beating out freshman Brad Hunt and Woodford, who tied for second with times of 54.38. Coggin followed in fourth in 54.44 and sophomore Sean Glass claimed fifth with a time of 55.60. Nam followed with his second win of the meet, winning the 100 Breast in 59.03. Acquaviva followed in second place as he touched in 59.87.
The 1650 Free saw Contag take third place with a time of 17:11.96. The Blue Jays wrapped up their final relay title of the meet with a time of 1:33.56 in the 200 Medley Relay. Acquaviva, Nam, Gisriel and Lordi swam the winning relay for Hopkins. JHU again showed its depth in the backstroke as the Blue Jays claimed second through ninth in the 200 Back. Davis led the way with a time of 1:53.79 to finish second. Cunningham followed in third (1:57.06) and Woodford in fourth (1:58.76).
The Blue Jays did one better in the 100 Free, taking first through fourth, with Lordi winning the event in 46.22. Coggin claimed second (47.21), followed by Woods (48.19) and Gisriel (48.22). Nam wrapped up his day with a win in the 200 Breast, clocking in at 2:10.97 to beat teammate Alex Polyak (2:14.67) more nearly four seconds. Freshman Gideon Hou would take third place with a time of 2:16.73. Freshman Gregory Kogut took the top spot in the 200 Fly, finishing in 1:56.26. While Schimdt took third place in 1:57.41. Hopkins swam an exhibition in the final event, the 400 Free Relay.
Hopkins returns to action at the University of Maryland Terp Cup, November 17-19 in College Park, MD.
