BALTIMORE, MD - After an unusual scoreless first half for the fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team, senior defender Jessica Hnatiuk used a free kick about 22 yards out early in the second half to give the Blue Jays their seventh-straight Centennial Conference tournament title behind a 2-0 victory over Gettysburg at Homewood Field, late Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Jays move to 19-0 on the season to tie their highest win total for a season while the Bullets close out their season at 12-7.
Hnatiuk's goal in the 49th minute would be prove to be all the offense the Blue Jays needed to secure their 10th conference title, though found themselves held to a season-low 10 shots by the Bullets' defense. Senior Erica Suter drew a foul just outside the penalty box around the 12-yard line to give the strong-footed Hnatiuk a chance at a score. Hnatiuk curved the ball around a Bullet defender into the top right corner of the goal from the top right corner of the box to give the top-seeded Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Christina Convey took a quick feed from Suter right in front of the net to one-touch the ball just behind Bullet goalie, Allie Rivera, and slip it into the left corner of the net for an insurance goal just 10 minutes later.
Junior Meredith Maguire was perfect in the net for the Blue Jays as Hopkins recorded its 14th shutout of the season. Maguire picked up three saves in the win to extend her personal record to 7-0. Rivera collected two saves in the loss for the Bullets as she moved to 12-7 on the season.
Hopkins has had a lot of success in the title game for the conference championship, as it has not allowed a goal in the last seven title games.
The Blue Jays held the advantage in shots, 10-8, and corner kicks, 6-2, with Gettysburg not being awarded a corner kick until the second half.
With the win, the Blue Jays continue one of the most impressive seasons in program history with a tie for most wins and now have posted a new team-record of goals in a season with 82. Suter has had a large impact in that success and now holds five individual records including career points (138), career goals (54), career assists (30), single-season assists (14) and now has sole-possession of the single-season points record with 50.
With all the conference tournaments wrapped up, the Blue Jays will learn the NCAA tournament field tomorrow with the selection show slated for 1:30 pm. Once the field is set and bracket released, more details of the 2011 NCAA Tournament will be announced. Stay tuned to HopkinsSports.com for all the up-to-date information.
