HAVERFORD, PA - Senior Nicolas Barbera and freshman Mark Zimmerman each tallied 13 wins to lead Johns Hopkins to a 5-0 record at the Haverford Invitational. The matches were the Blue Jays' first dual meets of the season. JHU posted wins over William & Mary (21-6), Maryland (20-7), NJIT (19-8), Virginia (26-1) and host Haverford (17-10).
Hopkins opened the day against Virginia and dropped just one bout en route to the win. Junior Jay DeYoung and Zimmerman went 3-0 each to lead the Epee squad to a 9-0 win. In the Sabre, Barbera and sophomore Paul Vitale combined for six wins in an 8-1 JHU victory. And in the Foil, sophomore Robert Goldhirsch, freshman John Petrie and junior Even Stafford each went 3-0 in the 9-0 team win. JHU then took on the host and despite a 5-4 loss in the Sabre, pulled out the 17-10 win. DeYoung and Zimmerman once again combined for six wins to pace the Blue Jays to an 8-1 win in the Epee. Barbera and freshman Josiah Yiu each won a pair in the Sabre in the one-bout loss. And in the Foil, it was Petrie who clinched the narrow 5-4 win for the Jays.
Against NJIT, Hopkins got two wins apiece in the Epee from DeYoung, Zimmerman and freshman Andy Huang for the 7-2 win. Barbera and Yiu led JHU with a combined 4-2 record with Barbera clinching the 5-4 win. Goldhirsch went unbeaten in the Foil with a 3-0 mark, while Stafford went 2-0 as Hopkins won 7-2. In the win over William & Mary, Hopkins won a close 5-4 decision in the Epee before rolling in the Foil and Sabre. Zimmerman went 3-0 and won the clinching bout in the Epee for JHU. Barbera, Goldhirsch and Yiu combined to go 9-0 in the Sabre while freshman Glenn Balbus went 3-0 in the Foil to pace that squad to a 7-2 win.
Hopkins closed out the day against Maryland, sweeping all three weapons, including a close 5-4 win in the Epee. DeYoung and Zimmerman each went 2-1 with Zimmerman clinching the win in the Epee. Barbera, Goldhirsch and Yiu once again went a combined 9-0 in the Sabre. In the Foil, Hopkins got two wins apiece from Balbus, senior Ben Wasser and freshman Thomas Chen for the 7-2 win.
Zimmerman went an impressive 13-1 on the day and is now 22-3 on the young season. DeYoung turned in an 11-4 performance in the Epee to improve to 21-6 on the season. Barbera finished with a 13-2 mark at the invitational and boasts a career record of 143-112 as the Blue Jays' active career wins leader. Yiu had a strong showing at the invitational as well with a 12-3 record. Goldhirsch led the Jays in the Foil with a 7-2 mark on the day, while Balbus, Petrie and Stafford each picked up six wins.
Hopkins returns to action on December 1 at the Brandeis Invitational.
