BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team remained unbeaten on the season in dual meets with a pair of wins at the annual Thomas Murphy Invitational at nearby Loyola. Hopkins beat Loyola, 249-96, and topped Marywood, 281-65. The Blue Jays are now 4-0 on the season. Hopkins turned in an impressive performance in the relays, winning all five and taking the top two spots in four of the five. In total, the Blue Jays won 15 of 20 events at the invitational.
Hopkins opened the meet in impressive fashion as the Blue Jays took first and second place in the 400 Medley Relay. Sophomores Dylan Davis and Gideon Hou, senior Carter Gisriel and junior Will Kimball won the relay in 3:27.91. Coming in second place was the team of senior Dylan Coggin, junior Joe Acquaviva, sophomore Greg Kogut and senior Nick Schmidt with a time of 3:32.24. Hopkins then got second and fourth-place finishes in the 500 Free. Freshman Bill Gravley took second with a time of 4:44.89 while Kimball touched in 4:50.46 for fourth place.
The 200 IM saw the Blue Jays sweep the top three spots, led by junior Anthony Lordi who touched first in 1:54.59. Freshman Justin Tang finished in second with a time of 1:56.14, followed by sophomore Ryan Cunningham in third with a time of 1:59.64. Hopkins turned the same trick in the next event, the 50 Free. This time it was Coggin leading the way his first-place tie of 21.42. Gisriel touched in 21.57 for second, followed by senior Tyler Woods in third in 21.80.
JHU closed out the first day with a win and a third-place finish in the 800 Free Relay. Tang, Schmidt, Kimball and Lordi swam a time of 6:55.25 to take the win by more than 13 seconds over Loyola. Gravley, Cunningham, freshman Michael McGoldrick and senior Dan Raynard combined for a time of 7:20.75 for third place.
Hopkins kicked off the second day the same way it opened the first, by taking the top two spots in a relay - the 200 Free this time. Coggin, Gisriel, Woods and Lordi swam a winning time of 1:25.20 to beat their teammates by 1.15 seconds. Taking second were Kimball, Acquaviva, sophomores Aaron Katrikh and Edward Pagano with a time of 1:26.35. Tang followed with a second-place finish in the 400 IM, touching in 4:09.03 while Cunningham took third place in 4:16.14.
The Blue Jays then dominated the 100 Fly, taking the top six spots. Schmidt led the way with a winning time of 51.44. Gisriel took second (52.07) and Kogut placed third (52.21), followed by junior David Woodford (53.34), Pagano (53.41) and sophomore Joseph Connors (53.47). Lordi and Kimball then combined to go one-two in the 200 Free. Lordi took the win with a time of 1:42.60 while Kimball touched in 1:44.05. Davis and Coggin turned the same trick in the 100 Back. Davis clocked in at 52.26 to take the win, with Coggin following in 53.61 for second.
Hopkins did itself one better in the 100 Breast, sweeping first through third. Hou paced the field with a winning time of 58.64 to win by nearly two and a half seconds. Acquaviva touched in 1:01.05 for second, followed by junior Alex Polyak in third in 1:01.78. Gravley placed second in the 1650 Free, finishing in 16:23.17 and McGoldrick placed fourth in 16:52.08.
JHU continued its winning ways in the 200 Medley Relay, taking first, second and fourth. Acquaviva, Hou, Gisriel and Lordi swam a winning time of 1:35.36. Coggin, Polyak, Connors and Woods combined for a time of 1:38.33 for second place. And taking fourth was Woodford, Cunningham, Davis and Gravley with a time of 1:41.32. The Blue Jays followed with first, second and third-place finishes in the 200 Back. Tang led the way with a time of 1:52.51, followed by Davis (1:53.01) and Cunningham (1:56.73).
Kimball followed with a win in the 100 Free, touching in 46.94 to just beat Lordi by five-hundredths of a second. Coggin placed fourth in 48.15. JHU turned in another one-two-three performance in the 200 Breast. Hou took the win as he clocked in at 2:12.89, followed by Polyak in second (2:15.26) and Acquaviva in third (2:17.14). Schmidt and Kogut then went one-two in the 200 Fly as Schmidt touched first in 1:55.53. Kogut then touched in 1:57.48 for second place.
Hopkins capped the invitational with a first and second-place finish in the 400 Free Relay. Coggin, Schmidt, Woods and Lordi combined for the win with a time of 3:09.04. Kimball, Acquaviva, Gisriel and Tang followed in second place with a time of 3:11.29.
Hopkins is back in action at Rutgers University's Frank Elm Invitational, November 16-18.
